I spent a weekend in college reading the entire DragonBall manga. I never managed to find out why people like it. The first arc when it was sci fi journey to the west with dirty jokes was good though
Definitely nostalgia, it was great as a kid with lots of content to get lost in imagination, and the kick-assery of it all, but I watch it again a bit with my kid and it's objectively a hard watch.
It a phenomenon in my country in the early 90's. The first series was fun but after that things started going crazy.
This is why I don't converse with dark souls 2 apologists.
Ironically, Parks and Recreation is my biggest, "I watched all of this and enjoyed very little of it" show.

I loved parks and rec, and I think that's a super fair way to feel about it. It has a very cheesy veneer hiding some really great comedy. I think 30 Rock had the same problem, and I get why a lot of people weren't into it. Or maybe the comedy just doesn't resonate with a some people, idk. I liked it, but I can see why other people wouldn't, even if I can't verbalize that.
There's eight Harry Potter films!? Aren't there only like 4 or 5 books? Did they pull a The Hobbit?

That's wild. I didn't even have the patience to get through one HP book or film without getting bored/falling asleep, let alone 7-8. Don't know how people do it.
Meanwhile I know someone who watched the entirety of a very popular series (can't remember which one at the moment) just so he could tell the obnoxious fans of it, that it was shit, and exactly why it was shit.
Me with Breaking Bad. Just to get ahead of the insufferable BB fans, it's not a bad show, it's just no Wire or Sopranos. Better Call Saul, though? Oh baby, now we're talking.
Funny you say that... Loved BB, hooked me immediately, but BCS?? Shit, it started so slow but it's by far the better series. They really let things stew and hit you with the payoff repeatedly.
I liked BB, I thought it was pretty good, and BCS I still have yet to finish (got up to season 3 and then got distracted), and thought it was also pretty good.
What did you find lackluster in BB that BCS did better?
All of this is imo, but. My biggest issue with BB is that most of the characters lack any meaningful depth; they feel like caricatures rather than real people. The writers didn't have a long term plan for BB, and I feel like it shows in a lot of the storylines. I don't think Walt's character was consistent at all, which bugs me because he's the focal point of the story.
All of these things I think BCS addressed and improved on. And again, I don't even really dislike BB, I just think it feels like an off-brand sopranos. BCS, on the other hand, is the genuine article. I honestly think it's one of the best shows that's ever aired on regular cable. But I'm just some random dickhead on the internet, so who cares what I think lol.
I think part of that with BB is that it takes place over a very short amount of time (like, under two years?). Not that there isn't time for growth, but it's pretty non-stop of just Stuff Happening as Walt just chaos-gods his way through things.
It's always got the throttle down and so there's very little reflection time. Like, all the Sopranos' action moments just back to back.

I started reading the book "Gone Girl" and noped out after the first chapter because I couldn't stand the yuppie narrator. Then I saw the film and loved it. Next I read some more books by the same writer and came to realize that she's a great writer who can create really horrible characters.
Writer was so good she made me not read her book.
One of the hardest thing for me when recommending media to friends and acquaintances is to not oversell it and only do it when asked. Because I know very well what being on the receiving end feels like, and I know they mean well, but also, I like to watch (read, play) stuff at my own pace
I've never seen a single Lord of the rings movie and I don't want to.
The CGI is amazing.

Seriously, if people have that much investment in my enjoyment of anything, that will ruin any chance I might have otherwise had of enjoying it.
I had an experience like that with the anime Berserk. Had my coworker not been so desperate for me to like it, I probably would have.

Also, One Piece fans. As much as I love one piece, it's not for everyone. Idk why that's so hard to grasp for some of the fans. They just say it gets better. People might not like it for various reasons, From poor animation (In the beginning) to bad pacing. Also, the lengthy fights and the artstyle could be a turnoff.
I like to say, if you don't like the East Blue Saga, its probably not for you, but you kind of need to power through some of the earlier arcs as the author establishes the world and tone. If you don't like it because Syrup Village is kind of a mess, you could easily miss out on a great series.
If somebody tells me I need to power through several bad arcs to get to the good stuff, I kinda just immediately lose interest.
That was Game of Thrones for me. I watched to first episode, didn't like it, despite my friends telling me I just have to get through the first 2 seasons and then it's really good.
That's not a good show. That's Stockholm syndrome.
On the flip side, I do feel like this for The Expense. First season felt like a slog, but the rest of the show is amazing. A lot of people love the first season though, so I guess that's just my preference. I honestly feel the story for the whole first season should have been done in one or two episodes.
Its not like they're terrible and you need to power through, the early chapters go through arcs pretty quickly, and other than syrup village I don't think any are really bad, just not quite the peak that justifies reading 1000+ chapters, but if you don't think by the end of the first 50 or so chapters there's anything to offer, and aren't loving it by 100 then its probably not for you.
Like Baratie has some pretty epic battles, really great character moments in orange town, and Arlong Park is when it really hits its stride.
one piece wins you over in phases. it starts out kinda operating in the "i wouldn't have sought this out initially, but it's fine enough to keep reading" until you get to a point where it's fully won you over and you have to know what happens next because it's your favorite thing
I played both Lisa: The Painful and Lisa: The Joyful, from start to finish, didn't like them at all. Though i kinda see the appeal, they're just not for me.
If watching 100hrs implies you enjoy it, then of course if you watch enough of it you will eventually enjoy it. You're just not big brained enough to understand media literacy.
