Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

I attended a presentation about the effects of increasing extreme weather events on infrastructure and the potential to amplify weather related disasters by a meteorologist from the Department of Homeland Security . Before the presentation I was asking myself why DHS has a meteorologist and by 5 minutes in I was in shock at the depth of the information presented and the number of national security risks presented by more frequent outlier storms and droughts. This presentation was based on existing events and did not speculate about causes of climate change . It was one of the best presentations I've ever seen and it saddens and scares me that such a vastly intelligent person and her coworkers are getting shit canned because of a narrow and poorly thought out ideology . We are magnificently fucked.

When you think about it, aside from 9/11, natural disasters have done far more physical damage to the US than any foreign power in recent history lol

Even stuff outside disasters , like she pointed out that protracted heat waves can stress the power supplies and cooling systems of data centers and potentially break the internet. It was a terrifying presentation, and it was the keynote. She finished and the room was silent for a while.
