A community for discussing events around the World
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

This article aside, it scares me how fast misinformation spreads on tiktok. They'd probably believe anything as long as you put subway surfers and music in the background.
It makes sense, since much of the userbase is just kids; but it's very dangerous for them.
PS, i don't support banning tiktok anywhere. Despite it being dangerous as i said, clearly that is not what concerns the governments.

This shit was a whole lot easier when the only computer with Internet was the one in the family room and you could see what the kids were doing online from across the room.
~~Big Brother~~ Mother is watching you.
Or better yet, don't let the internet raise them. Kids should at least access the internet from age 14, but anything before that should be with adult supervision.
It fucks them up heavily.
Germans who get their news through TikTok are less likely to see China as a dictatorship, be less critical of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and be more sceptical about climate change and the utility of vaccines than consumers of other media.
people want to believe in a conspiracy. t hey want to believe there is someone steering the ship, (evidently they believe its lizard people).
people are so brainrotted by social media, that you could convince people the moon is edible, if you make a video with enough production value and have the right person talking to the camera.
thats a huge reason why certified dumb as a doorknob joe rogan is held in such high regard. its a stupidity feedback loop.

When I was a kid, we were told the moon was made of cheese and we didn't even need video evidence of this to be convinced.
... Wensleydale?
Ironically the "Free Democrats" which are like a milktoast version of Musk style Neoliberalism/light Fascism, with recent endorsements of Musk by their party leadership, have gotten a good result in the previous election primarily because of their social media campaigns. Of course having the Axel-Springer Media heavily favor them also played a role. It is the publisher that recently had Musk endorse the fascist AfD party in an article.
But if you think this "Free Democrats" only recently got in bed with fascism, don't worry. They were also the party with the most ex-NSDAP members after WW2 and they advocated for "looking past" the Nazi history in the 50s already.
Propaganda works... More at 11
People who like China are more likely to download tiktok. I don't read anything comparing users to before they started using tiktok...
Social media + easily influenced kids is bound to have an effect.
But I agree this news doesn’t show causation just correlation.
It is reasonable to assume correlation in the context the causation occurs in. To imply TikTok isn’t influencing people is baseless ignorance or deliberately misleading.

Either you’re not actually replying to me or strawmanning me because I said said this.
Social media + easily influenced kids is bound to have an effect.
Apart from that, all I said was that the poll showed correlation between tiktok use and favourable views of Russia/China. I said the poll didn’t show causation, not that it didn’t exist. And I was only talking about views of Russia/China not generally on if tiktok is influencing people.
Just be very aware of confirmation bias, especially when it comes to politics.
People downloading TikTok are more likely to be impressionable children, TikTok then influences these children. Is a much more likely outcome, than what your suggesting.
