I was going to say the 90s and 00s before the recession was better, but then I remembered it wasn't great for the LGBT. Homophobia is casual and mainstream up until recently.

Yeah it's scary how much of Margaret Atwood's speculative fiction turned out to be speculativly accurate. Makes me really worried we're heading towards an Oryx and Crake future.
Watching is so far, just the things they talk about and the names the group had before taking over the government are really a retrospect of what has been happening, and something the US is on the path of.

You’re right some people do think that way, and others are convinced to do so because they think their worsening economic situation is because of someone else’s better social situation, when in reality it’s greed and oligarchic socio-political rule which ruins it for everyone across the board.

Ballpark numbers (guesstimated by ChatGPT). In the 50s (after the ww2 explosion of the US industrial capacity) you came home after an 8 hour shift in a fridge making factory and had an income that could easily keep up 3 kids (including education), 2 cars, 1 stay at home wife and a house (like in The Simpsons). Since then the work productivity has risen 600% - 700%, yet the average income has risen less than 150% and the median icome less than 80%.
It is almost like if you kill off half the male population there is twice as much stuff and two women for every man. We just need another world war to get there am I riiight?
At this point, that war will be fought with drones, which don't tend to discriminate by gender when they kill civilians...

And modern Americans are doing their damnedest to make the polio one true again as well.
A solid 30% of Americans are trying their best to bring all of that image back.

During the 50s, getting divorced was frowned upon. And I was reading about how housewife's frequently were either drugged/intoxicated to deal with their abusive husbands, or plotting to kill them.
