Too often i read "free upgrades" ... That sounds alarming that they want paid upgrades

It'd be incredibly difficult to do that with java edition. And for that reason, they wouldn't do it with their cashcow, bedrock, either.

Yep. It would fork.

Last free version plus mods to add features from paid upgrades.

Personally, I find it a bit weird that games are no longer even done. The only way it can end is enshitifaction.
