I havent tried this but you might be able to download this video with youtube-dl. Source: https://askubuntu.com/questions/627133/how-to-download-facebook-videos-by-using-youtube-dl-in-linux#627145 so nobody needs to go to facebook. Maybe you can even upload it here.

Jdownloader is also good, as well as wget. If you're on Android, you can try Seal or 1DM.

Thanks for chiming in. Thats helpful.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thanks, I'll look into it. But it will be too late to edit this post by then unfortunately. Lemmy doesn't let you edit them after a few minutes. Might be useful in a future post though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thats incorrect. I just checked it by editing my own last post which is from yesterday. Maybe your client wont let you do that?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Unless things have changed really recently, it looks like you can edit a post, but the changes don't apply.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Maybe that is an instance-specific feature. I have edited old posts plenty of times over the past year. Edits sometimes do not federate out to every instance properly, but I have never noticed an issue with an edit not applying to the instance the post is on.

I‘m not sure where you get your information but this has never been the case. Here‘s a post of myself that is 22d old and the changes have applied. They obviously would need to propagate through AP first but unless you have sources that show different, youre wrong.

I got it by trying to do it multiple times and the changes not applying. And I'm not using a special client, just the website.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Okay. Thats probably an instance/user specific issue then.

Well this made me feel old 😩 I completely forgot about the trailers before the movie haha. I really do like the way it is now better 😬

The parent asking if they wanted to do a 90s movie night and the little girl looking super serious and basically going "fuck no..." haha.

VHS's suck. The kids are right. There just wasn't anything better at the time.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago

I don't really disagree with her either, but her fury at the whole thing really amused me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

Betamax was better!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

He wanted his kids to have a genuine VHS experience, but that was needlessly cruel.

  1. If you stop the movie instead of pausing it, the player will take the tape off the read head and you can rewind faster.
  2. You always fast forward through the previews (and only switch to regular speed if there is a trailer that everyone really wants to see).
  3. The film likely had closed captioning, you just have to turn it on in the settings.
  4. The fact that the movie started from the middle shows that the parents are the type of inconsiderate asshole who does not rewind movies after watching.

Here's some VHS bits I ripped using composite. Not too bad for VHS quality without any retouching.

Looks good enough to watch for me, although there are already high quality versions of Red Dwarf available. I am just glad people are ripping rarer things that are only available on VHS and putting them up. You can see all of MTV's Liquid Television and a lot of episodes of VH1's Pop-Up Video on the Internet Archive. Those will almost certainly never be made available any other way for rights reasons.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah. I made this as a demo for customers wanting their home videos converted, but you're right about things that are disappearing. The chomps movie in this sample for example might not exist online, or the seeders may have since vanished. Not sure if it'd get taken down if I posted it on YouTube.

I've never seen one like that. Pretty fancy!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I feel certain that I saw similar in stores, but yeah, fancy!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You may have shopped at nicer stores than we did. Probably carpeted and everything.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Oh dear. My ex was a narcissist and loved to salivate over stuff he believed he deserved. I definitely never had something so fancy.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe no better. Used a screen recorder on my phone to watch the Facebook video.

Honestly, I think it's really a toss-up between Facebook and Google when it comes to linking to a video from an evil company, but the vitriol for Facebook is greater than the vitriol for Google on Lemmy in my experience, so I felt like it was worth saying something at the beginning.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah. Doesn't really worry me as a I use Facebook a fair bit for local groups. I know they're evil so on PC they're in their own browser.

I only tried this as someone else in this post couldn't see the Facebook video, and in the Fediverse world where posts become old quick, thought I'd jump in with a quick disposable alternative.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Not sure if it’s because I don’t have a login or possibly something else, but I couldn’t see it

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Huh. Weird. All that should happen is you get a login popup you can X out of. I just checked on Firefox on my notebook, but I can't tell you about Safari.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Tried again and it worked (Safari was as surprised as I was)
