At least 129 people have been killed in an earthquake that struck a remote part of northwestern Nepal overnight on Friday, police confirmed, as officials said multiple buildings have collapsed and warned that the death toll could rise.

The quake measured magnitude 5.6 according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and hit some 42 kilometers (about 26 miles) from Jumla, Nepal, in Karnali province. It struck at a comparatively shallow depth of 18 kilometers and the tremors could be felt as far away as India’s capital New Delhi.

One of my best friends died in the 2015 one. I hate seeing this happen again. I really hope the toll isn't as bad this time 💔

From the USGS shakemap and DYFI, it looks like there are some reports of strong shaking but mostly moderate to slight shaking. The depth is reported at 17 km which would have also contributed to relatively lower shaking.

So hopefully the damage will be contained especially compared to the 2015 event.
