Where in America is regarded the "mid Atlantic coast"? Because this description implies that it's around New York, but as a non-American, NY looks very northern. I'd have said mid Atlantic is like...North Carolina and Virginia.
The Mid-Atlantic coast is from Virginia up to New York. The term originated with the 13 colonies, where it was one of three primary groupings, alongside New England (Conn, RI, Mass, NH) and the South (Georgia and the Carolinas).
At that time, Mid-Atlantic was being used in the context of the North American continent, rather than the USA, which didn't yet exist. So if you consider the whole Atlantic coast of North America including Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, it makes more sense.
That's going to suck for Australia when over half the country secedes.
Western Australia can have their chunk, they are a bunch of 1970's backwards cunts who can't run their mines without FIFO workers.
And this comes from a Northern Territorian, an underdeveloped minority packed section of the country

I'm not sure whether this is actually a cool guide, or how an Australian thinks of US regions. But this map mostly aligns with my impressions of the USA. So, it may well be a pretty good guide.
I wonder if LA is a better comparison to Sydney. Sydney is much too hot to make me think of SF despite bay and nice bridges. On the other hand, I took the ferry a bunch when I lived there. The bay matters.
But beaches! Sydney has famous beaches. LA has famous beaches. SF has beaches too but they don't really come to mind when I think of the bay area.
I dunno. Hard to compare.
I'm not sure rural America and rural Australia are that close.
Even bum fuck nowhere Australia is quite diverse in people and have information about other countries and travel to the big cities fairly regularly. Both seemed to have great friendly people though.
Also the most dangerous sketchy places are in the outback, though some of the towns are fine, whereas in America it seems to be in specific cities or parts of cities, and others are fine.
