Maybe these are the only ones his handlers allow him to see, since he has items about himself brought to him?

Not exclusively I don't think but this is definitely an important aspect of all undemocratic, autocratic leaders: they tend to lose sight of what's real because nobody who dares oppose them or even bring bad news can come close to them. No doubt one reason why we came up with having elections every X years.
