I just played a round of Golf with Alexander Stubb, President of Finland. He is a very good player, and we won the Men’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament at Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach County, with the Legendary Gary Player, Senator Lindsey Graham, and former Congressman and highly successful Television Host, Trey Gowdy.

“President Stubb and I look forward to strengthening the partnership between the United States and Finland, and that includes the purchase and development of a large number of badly needed Icebreakers for the U.S., delivering Peace and International Security for our Countries, and the World.

“President Stubb told me, in the most powerful of words, that the United States is STRONG, and BACK, AGAIN. I AGREE!” Trump wrote.

Finland on the wrong side of history again?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

He's the first European to convince Trump that Putin is unreliable and untrustworthy. Having to golf with the devil is sadly a part of realpolitik

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Oh sure, Trump will totally turn his back on russia now that Finland opened his eyes.

Source?

Because I'm thinking Stubb is just a lickspittle.

Finnish media (can't find a source in English, soz) claim a correlation with Stubbs visit and Trupms aggressive posturing to Putin

Stubb has through out his entire precidency been very pro Ukraine and being an experienced diplomat he should be very familiar with realpolitik and handling populists.

Well one can only hope.

I don't have much faith.

Thanks for the info.

Finland participated in the Second World Warinitially in a defensive war against the Soviet Union, followed by another, this time offensive, war against the Soviet Union acting in concert with Nazi Germany and then finally fighting alongside the Allies against Germany.

So out of those three things, only one I would consider "the wrong side of history," and it only really seems like that if you completely eliminate all context.

Are you really giving Finland shit for (rather successfully) defending their country against Soviet invasion?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That was disgraceful but tbh it seems that there were no better options

Especially when the rest of the world didn’t help. Sweden sent some volunteer soldiers but that was basically it.

This time we're in NATO, though. We should be able to loudly and proudly say NO to someone who threatens our allies, instead of sniveling and cowering in front of them like Stubb does.

Stubb seems like a levelheaded guy who knows what's up. He has a whole channel of YouTube videos explaining his positions, and he's mostly got the right idea about economics and geopolitics IMO. Yes, he's kissing Trump's ass, but I think he's doing it to keep things on track in Europe as much as possible.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Would you kiss Putin's ass like Stubb kisses Trump's? Fascists shouldn't be given any leeway, that's how they get in and keep power.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If I felt it was the best way to save my country from destruction, yes I would. I wouldn't let him act against the best interests of my country, but I would kiss his ass if I thought it would help. From everything I've seen, Stubb is staunchly against Russia's imperialist ambitions, so unless he's really just blowing hot air about that, I doubt he will just go along with Trump's current plans for Europe.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

If Stubb wasn't going along with Trump's plans he would be opposing him strongly instead of golfing and smiling with him. At the moment he comes off as a weakling with no spine, but that's to be expected when his party works with the far right already.

Unlike in WW2 when USSR attacked Finland is in an alliance, now. How do you think their allies see Stubb's actions after Trump has again and again threatened to attack them? All this ass kissing just to keep some ice breaker deal alive?

You never negotiate with fascists, there's literally no point in that unless you're ready to lick their boot.
