The idea of 3D printed resurrection machines isn't new. It's pretty much the whole basis of the Undying Mercenaries series by B.V. Larson

Yeah, but the concept also has a LOT of space to play in but most writers play it safe. Way too many just treat is as a handwavy checkpoint system and move on with the plot they care about.

Soma (video game, not a book) was a really horrifying dive into being able to save and upload a consciousness. Not a lot of stories try to dive into how do you know if a "copy" of you is truly a copy. It's like a Turing test on steroids trying to figure this out. Being able to practically test just how different someone can be from a single different event.

It's one of the things I really enjoyed about the Bobiverse series (although apparently later on they added the idea of a soul, which just kinda seems like a cop out to me)

Not really a soul, more like an explanation why the bob clones are different and why they can’t just make 1:1 clones of an each other - even when their consciousness moves from one place to another.

They just called it a β€œsoul” in lack of a better name.

The cloning in space narrative was also covered by Moon (2009).

That's a bit of a spoiler, isn't it?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

With respect to Moon? Yes, but the movie has been out for 16 years.

Dude we had people whining about FF7 spoilers when the remake was announced, people just be eeber jeebers.

Haven't seen it. Good?

I should add it to my list

Tbh kinda boring

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago

It's more pensive and slow, with a darker mood, but the script is really good.

Oh man I cannot wait for the new one next month!

Yeah. The MC is a jackass but he does learn a bit over the series and there's some depth to the thoughts on how little would react to being able to come back from dying repeatedly (and the first "training scenario") under most scenarios.

I enjoy that he's just some shit kicker at the beginning and really has learned over the series (though there's like 18 books now so it's not hard to imagine). Though he is quite a Gary Sue.
