This is literally the 80s version of holding up your phone to record a video of a music concert.

No, not really.

Because many of those videos won't be replayed over and over again. It's like recording fireworks. Almost pointless. You may as well just enjoy the concert (edit: without videotaping it.)

The tape recording, though, you bet it was enjoyed countless of times!

And shared! And mixed.

The best way of showing you liked someone back then was by giving a mix tape.

I guess later the same could have been said for CDs but they felt like office goods...

Lol office goods! :)

They do feel like that now. But back in the day, I thought it was the apogee of technology, so handling them (buying them, playing, sharing) was really cool.

But then, I was 14.

The difference is in Poland in the 80s it was hard and expensive to buy music so it might be the only option for them to get it.

Yeah, and you can tell just by the look on his face that this is serious business. He's just got to hope nothing going wrong while it's recording. I'd be so nervous about something breaking in the machine!

Or some guy walking up to him "HEY BUDDY, GOT A CIGERETTE I COULD BORROW???" "DAMMIT ASSHOLE!!! GET OUT OF HERE!!!"

The condenser mic and magnetic media probably produced a better recording than a cell phone mic/digital audio.
