From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Auto summary:

In the YouTube video titled "Fedora with KDE by default? XZ backdoor fallout, German state moves to Linux," Nick discusses various topics related to the Linux community. A proposal to make KDE the default desktop environment for Fedora is brought up, but it's unlikely to be adopted due to Fedora's close relationship with GNOME and investment in that desktop. The video also covers the XZ backdoor fallout, which led to delays in the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and affected other distributions. The German federal state Schleswig-Holstein's decision to transition 30,000 computers from Windows and Microsoft Office to Linux is discussed, as well as Linux Mint's upcoming release, which will move to PipeWire as its main sound server and revert to providing Deb packages for Thunderbird. The speaker also touches upon AMD open-sourcing documentation and source code for their micro engine scheduler and Thunderbird's progress on native Exchange support. The unpopularity of Snaps as a package format in Fedora and the importance of ensuring good quality Snap versions of applications like Thunderbird are emphasized.
