That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Basically any word or short phrase I can think of to mean "a lot of muscle" also implies skinny or almost no fat. Fit, or lithe bring to mind more a track athlete's body, and buff, ripped, jacked, muscular, ect. generally are though of more like a body builder. The closest thing I can think of is dad-bod but thats obviously still pretty far off as well as being male-specific. Is there even an English word for this?

I'm asking in terms of crafted, interactive activities that aren't necessarily aiming to be fun. Say a little more serious or dry, but still interesting, thought-provoking, and emotionally compelling.

I mean the Voyager 1 probe which is currently the human-made object the farthest away from earth. The space program people operating the mission seem to have great control options, they even "moved software from one chip to another" (link) Apart from the probably gigantic and expensive installation needed to receive and/or send messages from/to that far away from home (23 hours of delay?), are there any safety measures to prevent a potentially malicous actor from sending commands to the probe?

I occasionally produce music and starting to get back into it. I just got a new machine with Windows 11. Anyways, this issue has been a thorn in my side for years. I CAN’T stand when you are browsing files through windows explorer and if you have a folder full of just audio tracks(.mp3, .wav, etc) then windows will automatically set the folder properties as “Music” - which means it shows you the track #, artist and other music related metadata it thinks you want to see. I want all my folders to have their properties set as “General Items” by default but not sure it’s even possible.

I absolutely cannot stand this and I’m determined to hopefully figure out how to turn it off - or what I’m doing wrong. If anyone knows what I’m even talking about or have any input I would greatly appreciate it 🙏

I mean, I read news articles that say the TSA fail to actually catch prohibited items like weapons or drugs most of the time... so what's the point? Many people are calling this "Security Theater"... Does this "Security Theater" actually scare away a would-be terrorist?

Is there an easy and free way for me to host a website specifically for displaying college notes? Some of my peers have created a repository of notes and content and stored them in a shareable Google Drive folder. I, however, wish to share my notes in a format more practical than just a cloud storage directory, similar to those of code library documentation sites.

My requirements are as follows.

  1. I want the website to allow categorization of notes into courses and units or deeper if necessary.
  2. The notes should support file formats like PDF, images, markdown, HTML or a combination of any of them.
  3. I should be able to add and edit the notes from any device at any time.

Is there any pre-made software for this purpose or do I have to create a website and a workflow myself? I am fine with either of them as long as the above requirements are met in a convenient manner.

Just when I think I have somewhat of an understanding of the fediverse, there becomes more questions. So, I am the moderator for [email protected] and I see many “boosted” posts. Does that occur any time there is a comment on that post from Lemmy, or has someone made another account on Mastadon that is using the same photos from the dadjokes Lemmy community?

At McDonald's, I saw that their sweet tea comes from a plastic bag inside a metal container, which stays in there all day. That doesn’t seem sanitary. Then I found out some places, like Olive Garden, heat soup in plastic bags by putting them in hot water. Isn’t this like leaving a water bottle in a hot car, where plastic leaches into the liquid? How is this okay? Like, I feel like that would be so explicitly illegal in other countries. Taking a big plastic bag of soup and just throwing it in water for the plastic to obviously separate from the bag and be intermingled with the food...

It sounds a lot like poison, like it's literally poisonous. Like how is this okay in the USA?

I work with a needy man, the kind of person who needs constant attention and feels threatened by silence. If I choose to read something on my phone instead of giving him attention he asks if everything's all right. If I choose to meditate, adopting a yoga like position and closing my eyes before working he asks the same. It's like he needs people talking to him constantly.

I am the opposite, I believe: I don't talk about my life at work, I go there because I need a paycheck, but I'm open to learn from more knowledgeable colleagues, something he clearly is not.

What I've done so far: avoiding him, not looking him in the eye when he wants to talk to me, telling him that I'm working when he wants to talk to me, giving dull answers, feigning ignorance about several topics, ignoring him when I'm talking to another person and he asks what we're talking about.

He still comes and sits next to me and tells me about his family, something I don't care about.

I'm torn because I want to tell him to leave me alone, that I don't care about his life, but considering the 'offense' this seems too much and knowing me I'd immediately regret it and feel bad about it.

Why am I like this?

Me and my girlfriend are attempting a keto-style diet, but I am a terrible chef and don't have much energy to cook generally. Previously I'd mostly eat soups and stews since I could make a huge pot, freeze some of the extra and eat it with rice, but most of the recipies I know aren't keto friendly (or at least the one suitable for a full meal). It also doesn't help that I'm a pretty terrible cook and my girlfriend is used to well-seasoned African cuisine.

I'm hoping to find some keto or keto-adjacent meals that can be prepared in bulk easily, and ideally (but not necessarily), frozen.

I'm in the unfortunate position to be job hunting, so I have to answer unknown numbers. For years, I've gotten "I'd like to buy your house" spam calls. I've never been in a situation where I'd sell to a random caller. I can't imagine one, either. I can imagine needing to sell my house, but I'd call a realtor or something. I wouldn't engage a random cold-caller.

Does that ever work? Is it legit? I assume it must be profitable, because they keep doing it.

Or am I the only one remembering this opinion? I felt like it was common for people to say that the internet couldn't be taken down, or censored or whatever. This has obviously been proven false with the Great Firewall of China, and of Russia's latest attempts of completely disconnecting from the global internet. Where did this idea come from?

I'm NOT the parent in question. Just a FYI.

And by mental capacity, I mean like not just IQ, but also other mental conditions like depression, ADD/ADHD, etc...

Like the child(ren) has not done anything wrong like crime or misbehave, but simply the parent thinking that giving an inhertance to (in their view) a "mentally disabled" child is a waste and "would just end up in the hands of government". And they justify it since they think that "the kid can just get disability income anyways". (Location is USA, for reference)

I personally think this is just very ableist... what do you think? Is it okay for parents to do that?

I know using a headset helps, but you're still talking, so...Do you adjust the mic settings to pick up even as you speak quieter, or...?

How do you check to ensure you're still audible enough to those on the other end if you do that?

Also this isn't a shared room situation, so that helps, but I want to be sure I'm not being too loud.

Thanks for any advice!

Why do people put pistols in their mouth to kill themselves?

I'm remembering a scene from Fight Club and Possessor where the main characters put pistols in their mouth in an attempt to "kill themselves" (plus other movies I've seen).

In Fight Club, Tyler misses (I guess on purpose), and in Possessor, the main character needs to do it after completing a contract (to leave the body she possessed).

In Possessor, the angle suggests she might miss her brain entirely.

I can understand something like a shotgun; it's not exactly something you can hold to your temple, but why put a pistol in your mouth?

Is it more effective somehow? Does it hit a part of your brain where firing from the side might otherwise leave you alive, yet disabled?

I'm sure you could argue it's just more dramatic from a movie critic perspective, but I'm sure people have really done this, and it maybe be a case of art imitating life, but I believe it would be the other way around.

I have been toying with the idea of various types of videos, including intermediate level painting videos, video game retrospectives, and some personal worldbuilding project videos. I don't want to feed the YouTube machine, but also don't want unsustainable expenses. I've looked at a few of the various not-YouTube alternatives but it is difficult for me to get a good read on that landscape.
