9th graders learn Linux for the environment!

Last week in #Hannover, #KDEEco joined Akademie der Spiele, an event for 200+ students with 20+ career/cultural workshops.

Students salvaged dozens of computers with #OpenSource #FreeSoftware.

They learned about the #environmental costs of #eWaste and device production.

They presented their work to peers and teachers!

Some even played games🚀

We're proud of our students - congrats for all you achieved in only 5 days!

I'm not sure if this is related to Night Light (which I don't have enabled) or even just the monitors dimming in power settings, but I constantly have to go and bring my brightness back up from 20% when I sit down at my computer in the AM.

I have disabled Sleep as well, and the only thing left is the regular Energy Saving features of dimming after X minutes and Turn Off Monitors after X minutes, but I've set both of those to short timeouts and when it comes back, it's at 100%.

Edit: For some reason I was on X11. I've switched to Wayland and will see if that changes anything.

Any ideas what's causing this?

An interpretation of what Konqi's current design might look like [Since imo theres not been a concrete layout and its for a character design which i absolutely love] [No this isnt perfect lol]

In Folder view mode of desktop if I place a folder on the desktop, it can overlap any icons on there already rather than refusing to sit in occupied areas. Is it the desired behavior or am I missing something?

For eg. I installed Blur-glassy theme today to check with all options selected in my Fedora 40 installation. Still I needed to install the blur option separately and colors too. After everything still Dolphin and Discover do not look anything like the picture shown.

I have seen this while trying out many themes. They either partially deploy or sometimes not.

Is it because they were built for KDE 5 and this is 6 or something?

Pretty much the title. I have been trying to pinpoint what's causing it and the proper logs, but the only thing in common so far in all times it has happened is firefox and another xwayland application are present.

logs show several errors, including this one - but how could I file a bug report, if I don't know how to reproduce it ?

Aug 15 17:09:37 hostname konsole[3721]: The cached device pixel ratio value was stale on window update. Please file a QTBUG which explains how to reproduce.

My Okular settings are messed up (menus are broken, details probably not important to describe).

I tried purging the package and reinstalling,
tried clearing okular files from "~/.config",
got no relevant output opening from terminal,
saw nothing in man page bout getting more feedback...?

What do?

I couldn't find anything on the man page about, like, a flag to get it to tell you what files it's reading when it starts up or anything like that?
(
the only output I get when I open it from the commandline is:

Unable to open QuickAnnotatingTools XML definition
kf.xmlgui: Shortcut for action "mainToolBar" "Show Toolbar" set with QAction::setShortcut()! Use KActionCollection::setDefaultShortcut(s) instead.

)

[ btw, wasn't sure where to post this, so did three copies:

What is grouping plasmoid and where to use it?

EDIT: I managed to figure it out with the help of other members here and another stranger on the internet.

  1. Can be used on both taskbar and desktop.
  2. Needs to be in Add Widgets screen, first add Grouping Plasmoid to desktop and then drag and drop other needed widgets into it.
  3. No sign of tiling option available still, top tab bar lets you change the one in focus.

I have a multiboot setup and use rEFInd to boot. The EFI option named after Neon actually fails to boot it. I have to go to the specific kernel named option to boot it.

I thought re-installing the bootloader might fix it.

Hi Community, I’ve been an XFCE user for over a decade, relying on Thunderbird for my email needs. A few weeks ago, we decided to migrate all workstations at work from Windows to Arch Linux. For our needs, we chose KDE as the desktop environment that best aligns with our business workflow. Everything seems to be running smoothly so far, and to keep the KDE ecosystem as clean as possible, we also decided to switch from Thunderbird to KMail.

However, we’ve encountered an issue: IMAP syncing in KMail is significantly slower compared to Thunderbird. Our mail is hosted by Migadu. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to address this? Many thanks!

I spent a few minutes setting up a Plasma desktop to resemble what I like about GNOME Shell. A screenshot doesn't do it justice imho. Application Dashboard on Meta, Overview on Meta-W, a Panel and Icons-Only Task Manager set to Autohide at the bottom of each screen, and the Tiling Manager.

I'm trying to reassign the side buttons on my logitech superlight to keyboard input. However, the side buttons default to to back/forward.

The settings window for reassigning mouse input is in a 'forwarded' position, so clicking the 'back' button on the mouse results in the settings window moving back a menu level instead of reassigning the button.

The 'forward' mouse button can be reassigned, though, as there is nothing 'ahead' in the menu.

I've previously had luck reassigning the side buttons using input-remapper, but I'm on tumbleweed which doesn't have input-remapper in its repositories.

Is there a way around this UI quirk in KDE that will allow me to reassign the 'back' button on my mouse?

Or have any other tumbleweed users had luck reassigning both mouse side buttons on KDE?

One other approach I can think of is if it's possible to disable/supress the default forward/back behavior in KDE.

Hey everyone! I just updated my personal global theme set to Plasma 6, you can get it from "System Settings > Global Themes > Get New...". You can also find more application specific themes (Konsole, Kate, Firefox, VSCode, Kitty) in the Github repo for a consistent desktop experience. If you happen to find any bugs with the Plasma 6 port, please open an issue.

More preview images: https://github.com/qewer33/leaf-kde/tree/main/assets

And if you like this theme, consider getting me coffee! :D

Hello all,

I have installed fedora kinoite and everything is working as expected, except theming.

I know this is a limitation due to sandboxing and that there is a way around it.

Now, all guides are either only for Gnome theming or 2-4 years old.

Is there a simplified way on how to make applications like Firefox and libreoffice use the standard breeze dark KDE theme?
