Self-Tagging (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

The fediseer now allows instance admins to self-tag their instance as they want. Those tags can then be consumed via the API.

For example, one could use these tags to discover all instances focusing one or more topics at the same time. Places like pangora.social can use them to find more instances to suggest in their lists.

On the flip side, instance admins can also use them to help improve their blocklists in a "positive" manner. For example, let's say that you want your instance to be SFW, you could explicitly block any instance self reporting as "porn" or "gore" etc. Along with the endorsements and hesitations, this would provide a lot of tools to ensure you associate only with the people you fit well.

You can add or delete tags in the GUI or directly via the API as an instance admin

The new tags_csv arg on the /whitelist endpoint, will also return all instances which match any of the tags in your csv.

Let us know what you think and remember you can support the fediseer development on liberapay. Alternatively you can also sponsor the individual developers on github: db0 | rikudou

Currently lemmy is like the speedboat next to the heavy steam boat of Mastodon etc. While lemmy is still dynamic and flexible and can introduce new features easily without scaring off its established user base, mastodon can not do such experiments so easily. Now, if lemmy gains more momentum in the fediverse and establishes features, which other services don't have, it could really push innovation in the Fediverse further. What do you think?

How should I do this?

I understand not all videos get mirrored.

Can I create accounts on multiple instances and prompt them to mirror each other? What instances should I focus on?

My Lemmy Schedule app now includes the option to get notified of new posts in a specific community!

In case you haven't heard about the app before, here's what other things it can do:

  • schedule a post and post it to multiple communities
    • you can upload an image as well and choose between uploading to your Lemmy instance or to Imgur
  • create a recurring post that gets posted at a specific date and time (especially useful for daily/weekly/monthly/end-of-month threads)
  • schedule pinning and unpinning of posts (instance and community)
    • the pinning and unpinning can be specified as part of creating a post
  • the aforementioned notifications about unread posts from a specific community (useful for mods)
    • can be also set using a recurring schedule, so you can get the report daily/weekly/monthly etc.

To learn more, visit the [email protected] community.

P.S. It's open source and can be self-hosted using docker!

Today I learnt that at beehaw.org you don't really have to break any instance/community rules to have your comments removed by the admin. In their wiki page they wrote over the top, corporate-sounding articles about how "Beehaw aspires to be a diverse place" where "everyone plays an important role in that mission", how they are against Reddit-style power mods and in favour of fair moderation, but the reality seems to be quite the opposite.

I'm really glad Lemmy is not Reddit and there's always plenty of alternatives, which makes me appreciate Lemmy even more. No more yellow icons on my communities subscription list. 🏸🐝

I'm not yet fully sure what pirate crews are but they are somehow heavily build on open-source software and they protect minorities and distribute wealth but put more focus on free speech and self sufficiency. Jesus Houses also distribute wealth (but not as much) and protect minorities way less (we are speaking about progressive christians here). Work spaces can protect minorities but not as much and they can also distribute wealth but also not as much.

I find something like this very interesting. Additionally, I hope that awesome-lemmy-instances will merge this feature since the low number of blocked users and consistent low latency are the two main things I look for when searching for a new instance.

Hi Boost gang,

The first version of Boost for Lemmy is almost ready. If you want to test the app for bugs and give feedback before the app is published, follow this link https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.rubenmayayo.lemmy to enable an early access option on the Boost for Lemmy Play Store listing.

Thanks for your patience!

Just passing on a tip from FediTips I didn't know about. Using the format

(server)/tags/(hashtag without the #).rss

Your RSS Reader can follow hashtags e.g.

https://mstdn.social/tags/dogs.rss

You can see everything with the hashtag 'dogs' on mstd.social and every instance mstdn.social can see.

From the Average Lemmy Servers Online by Day graph

  • 18th September: 1224
  • 19th September: 1002

Does anyone know more about this? Seems a bit strange to have all of them going down on the same day

The number of subscribers listed in the sidebar is only the number of users from YOUR instance that are subscribed. This might make you feel like a community is 'small' or 'dead' when it actually isn't.

I also started to forget this till I was playing with the shields.io badges earlier and the numbers didn't match up.

Here are some examples:

[email protected]

  • My instance will see 310 subscribers
  • This instance will see 22.6K subscribers

[email protected]

  • My instance will see 6.03K subscribers
  • This instance will see 1.49K subscribers

Now my question is, what's an accurate way to see the total number of subscribers? Is it in the home instance for a particular community?

If so, it might be worth adding the badges to the sidebars.

([email protected])

([email protected])

([email protected])

([email protected])

([email protected])

([email protected])

To do this quickly, go to https://shields.io/badges/lemmy and enter:

  • [email protected] for community
  • lemmy for logo
  • Total Subscribers for label
  • modify the colors and style as you like

You can also modify the community and instance here and paste it in:

![](https://img.shields.io/lemmy/fediverse%40lemmy.world?logo=lemmy&label=Total%20Subscribers)

swap the fediverse%40lemmy.world portion

The Fediverse is growing rapidly. There are now tens of thousands of independently hosted servers, many new apps are appearing, and some big companies (like Meta) have announced they will implement ActivityPub and join the network. What decentralized future will we build, and how do we ensure it serves everybody?

This would push users toward local posts (especially on smaller instances) while still supporting a better distribution of user engagement over the threadiverse. And if you don’t trust that it was implemented correctly – you can simply check it by counting the amounts of posts against your chosen probabilities.

Edit: Changed feed's name from explore to mixed

Integration between WordPress and ActivityPub has been a long time coming. It's existed in several different iterations over the years, but the latest attempt is directly sponsored by Automattic, the owners of WordPress. This article covers some basic how-tos and explains some various quirks in the integration.

As a moderator of a Lemmy instance, you currently have two options to take: pushing users first to your local content or content from all instances you federate with. These options come with the costs seen in the picture. The moderator of another instance has the same choice. However, in this scenario, they will both always switch to promoting the local-feed. I don't want to say its wrong - it's just the most sensible way to act on Lemmy currently. However, if everybody does it, it is bad for the overall discussion quality of the Threadiverse.

Its a classical prisoner's dilemma from game theory, which sometimes happen in society, for example with supply shortage during lockdowns. A way to solve it is by making action B more positive and option A more negative. This would lead to more moderators choosing Action B over A.

Mastodon solved this with an Explore-Feed, which consolidates the Local- and All-Feed. I think this could also be a solution for Lemmy. It would result in less engagement decrease AND an overall positive effect on discussion quality.

Additionally, a general acknowledgement that instance protectionism is a problem and should be avoided could help to make A more negative. In other words: increasing the pressure by the community. This would put a negative social effect on option A. So: start talking about it with your moderators.

Do you think these two measure would do (additionally to more powerful moderation tools, which would only enable a working explore-feed in the first place)? Is this a problem on other services on the Fediverse too (at least Mastodon seems to have handled it quite well)?
