• Since 7 October, a variety of Chinese official state actors and Chinese state-affiliated media have been sharing narratives about the Israel-Hamas conflict. These narratives seem designed to seed anti-US and anti-Western sentiment by presenting Canada and the United States as key enablers of the conflict in Gaza.
• Pro-CCP (Chinese Communist Party) actors have also sought to present China as a peacekeeper seeking to create harmony and cooperation between countries. This is part of the CCP’s broader communication strategy to promote a ‘multipolar’ world in which China has a more significant foreign policy role.
• Canadian alternative media outlets such as the Canada Files and various influencers have published a high volume of content about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Many of their narratives have previously appeared in Chinese state media or could be labelled as ‘China-friendly’.
• The Canada Files (X: 8K followers, Facebook: 2.1K followers, Instagram: 556 followers, Telegram: 521 subscribers, TikTok: 15 followers) is an alternative media outlet which claims to pursue “anti-imperialist journalism challenging the ‘Canadian empire’” and to provide unique investigative reporting on the country’s foreign policy.
• ISD research has found that it has published articles conveying narratives similar to those previously found on Chinese state-affiliated media. ISD has also observed that its posts were shared by Chinese diplomats.

Eight minutes into a corporate phone call Liam Iliffe, a B.C.-based political staffer turned industry executive, starts to outline strategies he says the multinational fossil fuel company uses to influence provincial, federal and state governments in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The corporation employs lobbyists and analysts in key political centres including Ottawa and Washington D.C. In 2023, TC Energy posted earnings of $11 billion.

Speaking for 42 minutes, Iliffe goes on to claim TC Energy has surreptitiously influenced many major policy decisions.

“We’ve had some really remarkable results in terms of our message being repeated back to us by key decision makers in government,” he says, adding “we’ve been given opportunities to write entire briefing notes for ministers and premiers and prime ministers and it gets stuck on government letterhead.”

Olienick rejects the allegation he would threaten officers, but qualifies it by saying, "unless you guys are shooting at us first."

"But it wouldn't be you guys," he adds. "It would be UN guys or Chinese."

These people watch way to fucking many US made one hero goes on a killing rampage and saves the day movies. Remember Ashli Babbitt? She and her angry mob were going to overthrow the US government and hang Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi right up until a bullet ripped through her chest and everyone else went, "Holy fuck, they're shooting white people! The University of Waterloo in Canada has filed a lawsuit against its students for continuing its pro-Palestine encampment urging the university to disclose and divest from Israel.

According to reports in the Canadian press, administrators were suing the encampment for $1.5m in damages including "trespass[ing], damage to property, intimidation and ejectment".

The university alleges the student encampment has damaged the school's reputation, driven up administrative and operational costs for the university and depreciated the university's property values.

In statement released by organisers of the encampment, Occupy UWaterloo, the student group said it was "incredibly shameful" that the university adminstration had decided "to sue their own student body that's protesting the university's complicity in a genocide that's almost nine months in and has claimed the lives of over 40,000".

Hurried pursuit of a liquefied natural gas windfall in B.C. and Alberta will squander a key component of Canada’s long-term energy security while causing environmental devastation, according to a new report.

Scaling up LNG exports from fracking in the Montney basin that straddles the two provinces almost certainly will jeopardize local water resources, species habitat and the country’s struggling effort to meet climate targets.

And there could be another cost down the road: “The current policy of exploiting the Montney as fast as possible for LNG exports may create risks that gas will be unavailable for other uses in the future.”

This, according to energy analyst David Hughes, author of a comprehensive report called “Drilling into the Montney,” released June 24 by the David Suzuki Foundation.

“The Montney represents Canada’s largest remaining accessible gas resource and is forecast to provide a significant portion of future gas production with or without LNG,” Hughes told The Tyee. “Conventional production from mature gas fields in Canada has declined sharply over the past couple of decades.”

“Production has been made up by unconventional plays like the Montney which can only be accessed with the technology of hydraulic fracking and horizontal drilling. And those technologies come with significant environmental impacts in terms of climate change, water consumption, biodiversity loss and land disturbance.”

The Montney basin is an oval-shaped, 96,000-square-kilometre geological formation that stretches on a southeast diagonal from Fort Nelson, B.C., at its top and includes the territories of Treaty 8 First Nations. The Montney currently produces 10 billion cubic feet of methane per day or roughly half of Canada’s total.

In 1992, federal Fisheries Minister John Crosbie shut down the northern cod fishery — putting more than 20,000 people out of work in one of the largest industrial layoffs in Canadian history — as cod catches dwindled and harvesters were alarmed by the sight of smaller and smaller fish.

For Ed Wiebe, seeing prominent ads claiming that “B.C. LNG will reduce global emissions” while on his daily bike ride to work as a climate researcher was particularly galling.

“What really got me was it was just completely blatantly false,” Wiebe said about advertising displayed prominently on city buses and billboards in Victoria and the Lower Mainland. “I just could not understand how they could get away with it.”

Wiebe wasn’t alone.

According to the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, or CAPE, “multiple” anonymous complainants believed the ads were misleading and asked Ad Standards Canada to investigate. Wiebe confirmed to The Tyee that he was among them.

But Wiebe may never learn the outcome of his complaint. He has been cut out of the process after another complainant leaked an initial decision, which unanimously found the ads by industry advocacy group Canada Action Coalition gave an “overall misleading impression that B.C. LNG is good for the environment, amounting to greenwashing.”

MPs are required to complete public disclosure reports that contain, in part, property they own, sources of income and investments. These reports tell us if our elected representatives, and/or their spouses/dependents, are landlords/invested in real estate. The federal government makes public disclosures for members of parliament accessible through an online tool at the website of the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.

Earlier this month, Ontario unanimously passed the Homeowner Protection Act, 2024. The legislation will end a practice that has seen thousands of Ontarians unwittingly sign contracts that enable home-equipment rental companies to take security interests in their homes.

A security interest is similar to a mortgage. It gives a lender a claim on a borrower’s home to ensure that a loan is paid back. For many homeowners, getting rid of a security interest has meant paying sizable sums to purchase the equipment outright — often at a cost well in excess of the equipment’s true value — or fighting costly legal battles.

The number of Ontarians affected by consumer security interests has increased significantly, according to government data. The number of registered security interests rose from about 2,000 registrations a year in the early 2000s to more than 58,000 in 2023.

Ontario’s new legislation prohibits the registration of security interests — formally known as a Notice of Security Interest — for property that is primarily used for personal, family or household purposes, such as air conditioning units and water heaters.

Repair work on the five additional "hot spots" of the Bearspaw south feeder main is now complete, but the full restoration of Calgary's water supply is still days away.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek shared the news during her Tuesday afternoon update on the developments of the water feeder main, saying the underground repair work on the pipe has now been completed and the city is hopefully on track to have water service restored before the Calgary Stampede.

"That date is still a good guideline," said Gondek when asked about the city's previously stated July 5 completion timeline.
