"Sorry, as a language model I don't feel comfortable googling that for you. Have you considered clicking some nice ads instead?"

Every day I feel better about my decision to install GrapheneOS

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

What does this have to do with GrapheneOS?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

No Google Assistant. Nothing enriching a big tech corporation merely by me using my phone, that could disappear at any moment if deemed unprofitable.

So GrapheneOS removed the ability to have/change the default assistant?

Misleading headline. What's actually happening is that the ChatGPT app will have the option of setting it as the default digital assistant app. It's not replacing Android Assistant.

All the commenters here complaining but have you guys used Google assistant in recent months? It's absolutely fucking useless.

If this piece of shit can at least field a simple request without responding with "sorry I don't understand" then it's at least a step up. The bar is so very low here.

This article seems kinda misleading. Even if you could set ChatGPT as your default assistant on Android it will not be triggered by a hotword like Google Assistant does.

Edit: It might be coming in Android 15.

Sure, it will be the new thing I never use.

Yes, AI here, AI there, nobody cares.

"Apples could soon replace oranges in your fruit-based desserts"

I mean, honestly, what a worthless fucking title.

I am so happy there is AOSP / Distros actually making it usable.

Did you know Google does as little work as possible making their FOSS projects usable? Chromium, Chromebook Firmware, AOSP, ...

Its very interesting what GrapheneOS all needed to do, to make it work well. For example they translated the Google Pixel Carrier stuff to AOSP (which is not compatible with the PixelOS stuff!)

The next rung on the ladder to enshittification.

Awesome. Now Google Search and Google Assistant will be terrible.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

Now? They've both been lacking (and declining) for years at this point.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

This is funny because accessing Google Assistant is clunky AF on my both my P6P and P8P. In fact the only way I know how to launch it in lieu of allowing Google to listen to everything I say, is to connect headphones and hold the button, WTF?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

How about they allow us to use the special assistant button from some manufacturers to be used for anything? Would be much more useful.

Great...just great.
