Very nice shave today. APR was out of business when I entered the hobby and it is a shame what happened there. I got this smush/sample from u/VisceralWatch a while ago. A really nice, interesting, soap and scent, and today I used up the last bit I had of it.

The razor is my second Puma 89. This one was a deal I could not pass on. I put a coticule edge on it. Here is the video of that.

I had assumed you were in the hobby for longer! Probably due to your advanced ~~age~~ maturity.

I’ve been aware of the hobby for a very long time. My first serious bout of straight razor shaving was 10-12 years ago, and I used to refer to the Badger & Blade people as ” those crazy razor guys .“ I never really thought I would become one :)

That would make it right after "The Scene That Saved Dovo From Bankrupcy". Did it also get you?

I liked that movie but somehow was unaware of that scene.

Apparently this scene has triggered a massive straight razor boom

That's great. I was at a large company when that movie came out and a bunch of GenXers took up straights at that time. I guess the movie might have had an influence. I've always been enamored with the elegance of straights. I feel like I've finally cracked the code with them. As an aside, you posted that you have 430ish straight shaves. I think you're off by about 100. I'm currently at 541, and you are almost always a little ahead of me.

I think I'm ahead of you in open blade shaves by 4, but I'm pretty sure I have only 436 straight razor shaves. I use my Wecks quite a lot

Ahh. That makes sense. The numbers have to work in order for me to feel comfortable in the world :)

Oh, then you must have a similarly negative reaction as I did to the volkswagen crate 😅

I like very much that a benefit of the volkswagen test is that it runs faster. 🤣

RIP in Pieces

  • Brush: Rubberset 400-3 #Hollow
  • Razor: Victoria 4 (6/8", half hollow, round tip, carbon steel)
  • Lather: Australian Private Reserve – Raconteur
  • Post Shave: Siliski Soaps – Unscented
  • Fragrance: Stirling Soap Co. – Pharaoh's Dreamsicle

Theme: APR went out of business when its owner passed away a few years ago.

Relevant post & frag: All items in this shave are some differing degree of RIP in Pieces. Siliski soaps has stopped making wetshaving products, but are still in business. Stirling has retired Pharaoh's Dreamsicle, but are still producing a lot of other wetshaving products. Victoria has stopped making razors at some point and changed its name to Victorinox in 1909 (the maker of the Swiss army knife). Rubberset finally never really went out of business, but was bought by Williams in 1956 and stopped producing shave brushes.

  • Brush: L'Occitane Plisson Synthetic
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3 SB
  • Blade: Bolzano Superinox (German) (9)
  • Lather: Central Texas Soaps - Down By The River - Soap
  • Post Shave: Old Spice - Hawkridge - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: House of Mammoth - Santa Noir - EdP

Central Texas Soaps is no longer around. I double checked to see if maybe they kept making bar soap to sell locally (they used to sell stuff at farmer's markets and the like), but their website is gone, Insta profile gone, and Facebook gone.

The price tag on this tub says $12.75 for 5oz. of soap. I originally gave the brand a try because they accepted cryptocurrency, and at the time I was a crypto hundred-aire, so it was an easy splurge. I liked the soap so much, I bought a second tub.

This scent is marketed as a dirty river type of smell, but it's really fresh and bright, with a natural freshness to it that I really enjoy.

Challenge: Today I shaved with a Black Land double edge holder, and a Bolzano razor. I've used this blade 9 times so far. How many shaves do razors last for? I'm thinking of getting a new tub of soap. I see some brands with some really cool labels that I think I'll get. I don't know anything about the companies or people who make the soap, but the cartoons and scantily clad women on the lid are pretty dope.
