Five people taking part in a rally organised by Pax Europa, a campaign group against radical Islam, were wounded in the attack.

The policeman was "stabbed several times in the area of the head" while trying to intervene, local police said in a statement.

Immediately following the attack, he underwent "emergency surgery and was put in an artificial coma", but "died of his injuries" on Sunday, police said.

Some context from AP:

The officer was stabbed several times in the head and neck by a 25-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan …

The suspect was shot and wounded by another officer; he remained hospitalized and a judge has ordered him held on suspicion of attempted murder. Police and prosecutors have not provided a motive for the attack, saying the suspect was not in a condition to be questioned.

The attack took place during an event held by Pax Europa, which describes itself as an organization that informs the public about the dangers posed by the “increasing spread and influence of political Islam.” Michael Stürzenberger, a 59-year-old anti-Islamist activist who is one of the group’s leading figures and has spoken at its events, was among those wounded.

In no way do I intend to justify or defend the attacker here, but I do feel the need to point out that "anti-islamist activist" is a thin veil for "right-wing nationalist".

Same goes for Pax Europa. They may describe themselves as "informing the public", but they're a a right-wing extremist group who are under observation from the "Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution", which, if you know anything about German politics, could be described as "a little bit blind in the right eye", i.e. it takes quite a bit for them to even start observing threats from the right.

(Only reason I'm adding this as context is because in the comment above, only the heavily euphemised descriptions were cited.)

Ya, I live right next to where this happened. It's an immigrant heavy area. These guys planned, and a similar group the following day, to protest right next to the people they hate and want evicted from the country.

I agree, no one should be stabbed for their beliefs and free speech (to a degree) is important. But if someone came to my neighborhood and spent the whole day shouting out of a loud speaker that I didn't belong, my family didn't belong, my neighbors and friends didn't belong, despite some of them living here for multiple generations - I'd be upset, I'd feel threatened.

Now couple that with doing it in a poorer district against a specifically marginalized group who has been historically treated poorly for decades with talking points that are clearly racist and easily disproven - idk. No one should get stabbed but even if I believed those awful things I wouldn't do what they did unless I was looking for trouble.

Idk, my roommate and I have been talking about it all weekend. Yes we believe you should be allowed to punch Nazi's, no we don't think we should be allowed to stab anyone, yes 20% of the German population roughly hold dehumanizing beliefs that are dangerous and we should be educating them, no the government isn't doing enough to better everyone's situation and therefore racism and fascism are growing at an alarming rate.

He was actually convicted of multiple crimes including:

He was sentenced to a four months conditional prison sentence and 960 euros in 2015 for saying that all Muslims are potential terrorists at a Pegida rally

So maybe someone wanted to show him what the world would be like if the bullshit he spews were true.

Are you really defending the actions of this attacker? He killed a LEO...this is really fucked up if you're saying it's ok to attack people violently for their speech, no matter what that speech is.

No, not the LEO. We're talking about the guy the attacker was in an argument/brawl with before the LEO arrived.

Doesn't matter, this dude was out for blood from non-believers. Everyone seems to wonder why the right wing nationalist are getting stronger daily. This is why. Islam and civilized society don't seem to be mixing well.
