I would much rather they have the mute button. Put them in soundproof booths so he can't talk over her when it's not his turn.

I don't they'd mind either outcome, I think they have a solid play they can run in either event:

Muted mics - "Trump's own team thinks he can't manage to act presidential for 90 minutes!"
Unmuted mics - "Look at all these clips of Trump not acting presidential during our debate!"
