Et Tu, Brut?

  • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. Zenith Boar Brush 31mm × 50mm
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels 14 (8/8", extra hollow ground, carbon steel)
  • Lather: Boendoebaard Woesteling
  • Aftershave: Boendoebaard Woesteling
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz Tabac Man Fire Power

My Bundubeard/Boendoebaard package arrived yesterday (sticking with the Afrikaans spelling of the brand from here on out since the product names are Afrikaans, too). Woesteling is a Brut dupe and I like the scent, but I haven't smelled the original so I don't know how close they are.

(Side note, I think Woesteling is a tongue-in-cheek mistranslation of the original name. "Brut" means "natural", "pure" or "unadulterated", while "Woesteling" translates to "Brute" in both English and French)

I used my big Henckels 14 - one of my smoothest, most gentle razors - for this first try, but that precaution was entirely unnecessary: this soap is in Boendoebaard's mutton tallow base, and it's super easy to get a slick lather from it. Very enjoyable first impression!

I have a bottle of the original Fabergé Brut aftershave and also a bottle of the modern one. The scents are very close. I like the modern one a little better I think.

Love that bit smiling blade!

I have a modern Brut splash in the mail, looking forward to trying it. I think it's going to work well with Beaudelaire, too

Happy shiv, happy shave 🙂

Did you get "splash-on" or "aftershave"? I have splash-on and I like it a lot. I've heard the only difference is the "aftershave" has some menthol, but I can't confirm.

I'm getting the aftershave, so I'll be able to tell you. Unless there's a difference between European and American versions like for Mennen Skin Bracer.

For the record, I'm gettingthis.

That's the modern version that I have. As I said, its scent is close to the original Fabergé. I have not looked at the ingredients, but I never get a menthol hit from Brut. Aqua Velva has it.

It looks like that style of bottle is available on US Amazon, but only after you scroll down a bit. I like that packaging a lot more than the typical plastic bottles sold here, although that one is "only" 100ml and we get 7oz bottles here.

I haven't graduated to XL splashes yet, but I'm eyeing the big gulp Tabac splash to replace my almost dead regular sized splash.
