I’m subscribed to a couple of communities where those bots post regularly. I noticed a drop in content recently and realized I haven’t seen those bots for the past week. I’m trying to figure out where they got blocked and was wondering if our instance blocked them. Anyone have an idea?

If I close all lemm.ee tabs that I have opened for a session it always logs me out and I have to relog, which is so annoying, especially after having 2FA enabled. Is this only me or has nobody else reported this issue?

~~Also, why is there no "Prev" button after clicking on "Next" at the bottom of a page? I get using the back button, or shortcut but sometimes it's convenient to click it, or even just to know if you've scrolled to another page.~~ OK so apparently this is an intentional Lemmy change that removed it. Hard disagree, but oh well.

After the tumultuous 0.19.0/0.19.1 update over the holidays, the 0.19.2 update was so quick and smooth, i didn't even notice!

Thanks so much to @sunaurus (and other admins) for all the hard work!

Hey folks

This is a heads up that I will be performing some maintenance and hardware upgrades on our database this Saturday.

We are currently experiencing several spikes throughout the day which cause our database to become overloaded - this results in degraded performance for many users. The spikes are happening due to a combination of continued growth of the database, some expensive periodic scheduled tasks which Lemmy runs, and fluctuating traffic patterns. Some of this can be optimized on the code level in the future, but it seems that the best way to deal with it right now is to add some additional resources to our database server.

I am intending to switch to slightly different hardware in this upgrade, and will be unable to make this switch without downtime, so unfortunately lemm.ee will be unavailable for the duration.

As our database has grown quite a bit, cloning it will most likely take a few hours, so I expect the downtime to last 2-3 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience, I am hopeful that it will be worth it and that this upgrade will significantly reduce some of our recent long page load times!

Edit: upgrade complete!

I have now migrated the lemm.ee database from the original DigitalOcean managed database service to a dedicated server on Hetzner.

As part of this migration, I have also moved all of our Lemmy servers from the DigitalOcean cloud to Hetzner's Cloud. I always want the servers to be as close as possible to the database, in order to keep latencies low. At the same time, I am very interested in having the ability to dynamically spin up and down servers as needed, so a cloud-type solution is really ideal for that. Fortunately, Hetzner allows connecting cloud servers to their dedicated servers through a private network, so we are able to take advantage of a powerful dedicated server for the database, while retaining the flexibility of the cloud approach for the rest of our servers. I'm really happy with the solution now.

In terms of results, I am already seeing far better page load times and far less resource use on the new hardware, so I think the migration has been a success. I will keep monitoring things and tuning as necessary.

Happy new year!

Hi folks! I hope everybody had a good holiday period and I wish you all the best for 2024. I have some quick updates to share about lemm.ee:

Image uploads

Image uploads are now enabled for all lemm.ee users 4 weeks after account creation. The upload size limit is currently set to 500kb.

The 4 week account age requirement is in place to discourage spam and abuse. It is of course not a fool-proof solution, but let's give it a go and see what the results are.

Please note that lemm.ee is not intended to be a image hosting service! Feel free to upload avatars and banners for your profile and communities, but please be aware that we reserve the right to modify the upload limits going forward, as well as delete old images if storage costs become too high.

For image posts and comments, it would still be preferable for you to use an external image hosting service.

Federation delays

Over the holidays, our outgoing federation workers began experiencing some significant delays. I have been working on this problem for the past few days, and after updating to 0.19.1, applying some additional patches to the code, and changing our infrastructure a bit, I believe the issue has been resolved.

The good news is that now that we are on 0.19, problems such as this do not cause Lemmy to completely drop federated activities, as we now retain a persistent queue of federation activities for all linked instances. This means that after the issue was resolved, our federation workers started going through the backlog of likes, comments, and posts which you had made over the past several days, and sending these out to other instances. Essentially, all of your activities did end up reaching their target servers, just with some additional delay.

One quick side-note here, while we are now federating your activities in real-time again to most big instances, there is still a bit of a backlog left on the lemm.ee -> lemmy.world federation (it is a few days behind). I expect this to also catch up by tomorrow.

Performance

The new persistent federation queue is still quite a new feature in Lemmy, so it's a bit rough around the edges - after resolving the federation issues, our federation workers started going through the queue at extreme speed, which caused intense additional load on our database. This was one of the reasons for some performance degradation many of you noticed over the past few days.

Additionally, since updating to 0.19, there have been regular performance issues for many users. I have managed to solve a few of these by making some changes in our infrastructure, but I am also aware of a few more issues which I will continue to monitor and hopefully improve in the near future. Sorry for the inconvenience, I hope that the changes I have made so far will help make it a bit smoother already!

That's all from me for now, as always, feel free to comment if you have any thoughts, and have a nice day!

"read" posts are now hidden, footer says BE: 0.19.1. I didn't see any admin communication here nor any comments on the admin profiles. Is there another place to look for communication?

Any news on why this is happening with this instance ? it might be harder to check if upvotes and downvotes federate to the outside lemmyverse .

other instances seem to federate better.

Don't the instance owners use it ?

Recently, since the current Lemmy versions for this instance (0.19.0 for UI, 0.19.1-rc.1 for backend) may not be up-to-date with the final release of version 0.19.1, would an upgrade to the final version of 0.19.1 help with any issues the instance is suffering from lately?

I'm not sure if this will resolve the federation issues the instance is currently having, but hopefully this helps.

I'm not a member of this instance lemm.ee, but I have a meta question so I came here because "meta."

I know I'm lost and if you know of a better place I can post this, please redirect me. In the meantime here's the problem:

If you click on my profile, Then click "about," It indicates I've made 43 posts. But when you click on my "posts," It shows nothing and says "user has no posts."

What's going on?

I can only speculate:

  1. is it a glitch that will clear up soon? But I've checked other people's profile and everyone else has their posts showing.

or

  1. Are the moderators and owners of my instance messing with me? some might consider me an annoying user because I'm the kind of person who deletes any of my comments that have less than one upvote, So I'm constantly doing that and maybe that annoys the instance owner and the moderators or whoever runs this joint.

????

Where are my posts?

Right now the only way I can access my posts is to go into my inbox and click on anybody who's responded to my posts, or go into my own comments and click on any comments I've made in my own posts.

35

Take https://lemm.ee/c/moviesandtv for example. From lemmy.ml, lemmy.world, and sh.itjust.works, you can't see any posts or comments from lemm.ee users, and lemm.ee users can't see any posts from other instances.

I don't know what's broken, but something is badly broken.

36

Two examples:

  1. This post is not visible in https://lemmy.world/c/comicstrips
  2. This comment is not visible on lemmy.world post
37

Title.

38

With the login issues, the long load times and sometimes nothing loading, the "show read posts" bug, and no acknowledgment of the issues, this is a worse experience than 0.18.

39

Loading my own profile in both apps and on lemm.ee has been painfully slow since the 0.19 update, is anyone having a similar issue?

40

Purging app data didn't help; lemmy.world works perfectly.

EDIT: I logged back in after updating Jerboa to the latest version. It's probably because of Lemmy v0.19 update on lemm.ee.

41

I was wondering why I wasn't able to login, it turned out that I had to clear my cookies for lemm.ee

Feels good to be back and the update seems to be working!

Hey folks!

Lemmy 0.19 was released this week! It brings a bunch of awesome new features, so I hope you are all willing to forgive some downtime in order to upgrade to this latest version.

Unfortunately some migration will be necessary as part of this upgrade, so it might take a while, but I will try to keep it as short as possible.

I hope you are all having a great holiday period, and I will see you soon in 0.19!

Edit: Update complete!

Welcome to 0.19! Unfortunately, the upgrade took somewhat longer than usual, but I believe everything is in order now. As always, please let me know if you notice anything strange, and have fun!

None of the admins have done or said anything in two months. Admins, please say something!

44

Is there a way to restore deleted account? I accidentally (not really) deleted my account @[email protected] . That was my main account as to mod two communities [email protected] and [email protected] . That account also has profile picture and banner set. All of this makes me kinda sad. Should I cc admin and moderator? It feels kinda rude. Thank you!

What is lemm.ee's stance on federating with Threads? Personally, I don't trust Meta at all and I certainly don't like the idea of the company profiting off me and my content. That's why I don't have a presence at Facebook at all right now.

Any news from the instance admin on when we can switch to v0.19?

Considering the latest rash of spam images plaguing the platform, I decided to figure out how to block embeds entirely since I never really liked them in the first place and am sharing what I got working since I figured it might be something others would like to enable themselves. (Fyi, this method requires uBlock Origin)

  • Open your uBlock settings and navigate to the 'My Filters' section
  • At the bottom of the document, add two breaks and then paste this:
lemm.ee##p > span
  • If your instance is different than lemm.ee, then replace that with the instance you use to have it work.

With that enabled, images and videos shouldn't load in comments anymore. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, so feel free to share if you know! This is just what I knew how to get work asap. Hope it helps some people!

*0.19 seems to have borked the method I previously posted, but I was able to find another string that works that seems to be more efficient anyhow. Hopefully this one works for a while! I'm going to leave the old strings at the bottom here just to cover all bases. To reiterate, these are the old strings that, afik, do NOT work anymore.

lemm.ee##.comment-content > .md-div > p > [src]
lemm.ee##.comment-content > .md-div > p > video

Hello!

I've noticed that in some posts, although I see they have comments, I cannot see them when I go and read the post.

Why is that ?

49

I can't seem to upload images when using my lemme.ee account. I have no problems on other instances.

Does anyone know about this?

I'm looking for a community where discussion about the Lemmy software itself is discussed. I have a feature request and although I can't see any such request on the Lemmy github, it seems nearly impossible to me that no one has asked for it yet. I want to chat about it with other Lemmy users before determining if I'm way out in left field or not.
