Sorry if this is off topic but I'm looking to convert all Google or proprietary apps to all FOSS apps.

I have an old Galaxy S22 Ultra (Qualcomm, would need exynos to unlock BL) that cannot be rooted which sucks. I'm looking to replace the phone soon with a phone that I can root, degoogle, run MicroG, etc..

What is the best American phone on the market that can be rooted and used to load custom ROMs and such? I used to root the Galaxy S3 and S5 back in the day but haven't tampered with it in a while.

Hey, I'm trying to get word out about my app, not sure if this is the right place, please forgive me otherwise!

Short story: My friend wanted to track her period but did not want to sign up with her email or store her period information with some big cooperation or "in the cloud". She's a bit paranoid about data leaks (as she should be). She knows I like data and development so she asked if I could fix an app for her. Three weeks ago I had never seen kotlin before, well, now I have made an app in with (with help from chatgpt).

Mensinator is a free app, without advertisements that does not require any signup. Plus all the data you store in the app is only saved to your device and never leaves (unless you manually do an export and/or import, which is in Json-format).

Tell your friends, girlfriend, wife or whoever.

I have also shared the code on github since it's an open source project and have a discord for anyone wanting to join development or just request features or improvements. Everyone is welcome!

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some help in finding the perfect offline music player that suits my needs. My requirements are pretty straightforward:

  1. Minimalistic Look: I prefer a clean and simple interface without too much clutter.
  2. Double Tap Feature: I want the ability to double tap to fast-forward or rewind tracks.
  3. Offline Playback: I don't need streaming capabilities; I just want to play my locally stored music files.

I've been using YMusic, which I really like for its design and features. However, its primary function is streaming from YouTube, which I don't need for offline music playback.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you haven't done it yet, download the new update on F-Droid. I just tried it and its working properly now. I suspect it was a patch since the version is still the same.

Hi guys,

I would like to introduce FREE Browser for Android. I recently published it on F-Droid.

I derived it from FOSS Browser, which you maybe know. In the past I also made dome contributions to this app.

Recently I decided to develop my own version with focus on privacy, stability, and better support for user scripts, similar to Greasemonkey.

It is fully open source, has no ads, no trackers and provides

โ€ข AdBlocker using StevenBlack host list โ€ข Measures against browser fingerprinting โ€ข Advanced settings for javascript, cookies and DOM-storage (domain/bookmark based) โ€ข Third party cookies are not supported in general. โ€ข Support for Greasemonkey style scripts (supported: @match, @name, @run-at) โ€ข Optimized for one hand handling (toolbar at bottom) โ€ข TAB control (switch, open, close, unlimited tabs) โ€ข Fast toggle for most important settings โ€ข Zoom in/out โ€ข Search current website โ€ข Web search (from marked text via context menu) โ€ข Save as PDF โ€ข Open links in other apps (for example YouTube) โ€ข Backup โ€ข etc

Currently I am trying to implement support for Mozilla's cookie banner rules, to automatically deny cookies, where possible.

I hope you like it...

The beloved Simple Mobile Tools suite of Android applications is in the process of being acquired by an Israeli adware company, redolent of what happened to StartPage and even Ghostery.

Tibor Kaputa (u/tibbbi), lead developer of the project, confirmed it recently in a GitHub discussion.

The tintinnabular death knell has tolled for the SMT suite.

I will prohibit any mentions or recommendations of any app in the SMT suite in the coming weeks except something changes. This is because all the applications in that suite will definitely become proprietary adware/spyware within a few months.

There are amazing alternatives on F-Droid. Most of them are popular, so you all likely know them. Still, I will compile a list of SMT alternatives once I have some time. Meanwhile, you are encouraged to recommend the FOSS alternatives you know in the comments for the benefit of the community.

Any proprietary alternative will be removed, and will result in a ban.

This will be the megathread related to the unfortunate occurrence. Any other submissions will be removed.

Whatever you do, do not calumniate, heckle, harass, or insult Tibor in this thread and elsewhere. He served this community well for more than half a decade. He will be remembered for the benefic acts he performed.

The freedomware movement and philosophy will never die. We will always innovate. We will prevail!

Brief introduction:

  • FairEmail is probably the most comprehensive FOSS e-mail client for Android, with emphasis on privacy, light resource usage, and featurefulness.

  • Deepinfra is a service hosting AI models (e.g. Llama 70B, Airoboros) with APIs that come at a fraction of OpenAI's APIs cost (their headline being "$0.7 per 1M input tokens").

FairEmail had supported ChatGPT integration for a while on their Github release, and now it has added Deepinfra. Their super low cost makes it very accessible and convenient for quick e-mail completion, so I thought it would be worth sharing with you all!

Original Title: SimpleX Chat โ€“ fully open-source, private messenger without any user IDs (not even random numbers) โ€“ v5.4 is released โ€“ link mobile and desktop apps via secure quantum resistant protocol, and much better groups!

Hello all!

Also in v5.4:

  • Many group improvements:
    • faster to join and more reliable. Once you upgrade to v5.4, join the new users' group and find other groups in SimpleX directory.
    • create groups with incognito profile.
    • block group members to reduce noise.
    • prohibit files and media in a group.
  • Better calls: faster to connect, with screen sharing on desktop.
  • Many other fixes and improvements.

Read more in the post:

Install the apps via downloads page.

Please ask any questions about SimpleX Chat in the comments! Some common questions:

Was SimpleX Chat audited?

Why user IDs are bad for privacy?

How SimpleX delivers messages without user profile IDs?

How SimpleX is different from Session, Matrix, Signal, etc.?

Question 1

Bitwarden and (I believe) KeyPass seem to be the most popular among the members in this community. I was wondering if there was a particular reason for this because I'm still learning about the open source 'ecosystem'. I tested both of them (and I personally love KeyPass), but I noticed some people recommending one over the other, so I was curious whether they were equally safe to use.

Question 2

I've heard of several other open source password managers that aren't usually mentioned here, such as AuthPass, LibrePass, and Passky, and I'm curious if they're safe. Are there any vulnerabilities associated with them, or are they simply lesser known?

Question 3

I'm talking to more serious instances, such as when someone installs a malware / untrustworthy application. Can other applications and services access the manager's data, or do passwords remain protected at all?

I'm still new to this community, and all I want to know is how to use my phone more securely. I hope this post (question list) doesn't violate any of the community's rules. :) Thank you in advance.

I will buy a new smartphone and will try to be most FOSS possible. What are the best options?

I dont need a game phone, but a good, not the best one, camera will be nice. 6gb of RAM, 5G, good SIG (GPS, Glonass...) support and NFC.

Seeing as Apple is going to start support carrier based RCS messaging I need to know if there are any messaging apps that let me use it without the spyware. Currently I'm using QKSMS on CalyxOS for sms and signal for well signal. Thanks in advance.
