Hi guys! I'm in 4.4.2 version updated through obtainium, and now in app don't have any app, nor even apps to update

In an age of LLMs, is it time to reconsider human-edited web directories?

Back in the early-to-mid '90s, one of the main ways of finding anything on the web was to browse through a web directory.

These directories generally had a list of categories on their front page. News/Sport/Entertainment/Arts/Technology/Fashion/etc.

Each of those categories had subcategories, and sub-subcategories that you clicked through until you got to a list of websites. These lists were maintained by actual humans.

Typically, these directories also had a limited web search that would crawl through the pages of websites listed in the directory.

Lycos, Excite, and of course Yahoo all offered web directories of this sort.

(EDIT: I initially also mentioned AltaVista. It did offer a web directory by the late '90s, but this was something it tacked on much later.)

By the late '90s, the standard narrative goes, the web got too big to index websites manually.

Google promised the world its algorithms would weed out the spam automatically.

And for a time, it worked.

But then SEO and SEM became a multi-billion-dollar industry. The spambots proliferated. Google itself began promoting its own content and advertisers above search results.

And now with LLMs, the industrial-scale spamming of the web is likely to grow exponentially.

My question is, if a lot of the web is turning to crap, do we even want to search the entire web anymore?

Do we really want to search every single website on the web?

Or just those that aren't filled with LLM-generated SEO spam?

Or just those that don't feature 200 tracking scripts, and passive-aggressive privacy warnings, and paywalls, and popovers, and newsletters, and increasingly obnoxious banner ads, and dark patterns to prevent you cancelling your "free trial" subscription?

At some point, does it become more desirable to go back to search engines that only crawl pages on human-curated lists of trustworthy, quality websites?

And is it time to begin considering what a modern version of those early web directories might look like?

Hello! I'm a cromite user, and I come here to ask this question. Why if I increase the letter size from accessibility settings, it won't work? I'm on android 8. In other browsers like fennec or iodé works...

Google regularly launches updates to its algorithm to continuously improve search results quality. Think of these updates as a refresh of the system where rankings change: some websites see an improvement while others see a decline.

We know that at the end of the day, Google will reward us if our readers find our articles useful.

Or that’s what we thought.

You might have noticed that no matter what you google, there’s always a selection of the same publishers showing up at the top of the results.

Answer for future readers: Just download Quik which is a fork of QKSMS, still being maintained at the time of writing. Quik contains all the premium features of QKSMS+ but does not have a paywall and is free. The original QKSMS has been abandoned by it's dev (also at the time of writing) and the last major version released 3 yrs ago.

QKSMS is an SMS messaging app for Android which is open-source. There is also a paid upgrade called QKSMS+. I already wanted to buy it to support the devs anyway, but I now have a good reason to buy it. I need the premium version's ability to make backups of all my message history and export them to a different phone. However, when I went to purchase it from within the app; there only seems to be an option to purchase from the Google Play Store. The only places to get the app at all as far as I'm aware, is from either Google Play, F-Droid, or the Github. I personally got it from F-Droid, but there doesn't seem to be an option to purchase QKSMS+ from it... I'm pretty sure F-Droid doesn't have any purchases in it anyway.

So does anyone know how I purchase QKSMS+ without paying through Google? If the + versions source-code is not open, I can probably get it that way. But I don't know how to compile the code manually on my phone and would rather downloading it from the source be a last resort.

I used Avenza Maps in the past for offline navigation at various state parks. The park service provides maps and the app will let you navigate the trails. It's been a long time since I used it and I now have a new phone on which I never installed the Google Play services. The app is complaining that "check that Google play is enabled. .." and then quits.

All the sites I've searched show you how to install or enable Google play (which I don't want). I'm pretty sure that it's needed because the app allows for in app purchases, which i don't need. I don't think I rooted this phone. Are there any workarounds or shim/simulation apps that would allow the app to work without installing privacy violating Google services?

About a week ago, I finally made the decision to flash GrapheneOS on my Pixel 6. I've been thinking about moving to GrapheneOS for months but was afraid to do so because of missing functionalities or app incompatibility that would result in my Pixel 6 becoming unusable. Even though I could just re-flash stock Android should I encounter those issues, I didn't want to bother.

However, last week, I decided to set aside my fears and made the move to GrapheneOS. Whatever fears or concerns I had about missing functionalities or app incompatibilities were completely unfounded. Flashing of GrapheneOS was really easy, thanks to the instructions they provided on their website. The sandboxed Google Play environment still allowed me to download the key apps I needed, whether it be the mobile game that I'm currently playing or a smart home app (e.g. Ring) or a banking app (e.g. Chase). They all worked as expected, though my banking apps required me to turn on Exploit Protection Compatibility Mode, something that was explained to me in one of the Graphene Discussion Boards. Android Auto was another app that I needed for driving, and thanks to the latest update that was made by the GrapheneOS makers, I had no issues in setting up Android Auto to work with my car. That was a huge relief for me!

That being said, there is one thing that is not working, but it's not that important of a feature for me, and that is NFC. Prior to making the move, I did not use NFC that much for payments, although my car app did have a Remote Key function that relied on NFC. As far as I can tell, it looks like NFC is not usable in GrapheneOS. There's probably a good security and/or privacy reason for this, but I do wish something could be implemented for it, as it can be quite convenient. Again, it's not that important of a feature for me to have right now...more of a "nice to have" feature...but I wonder if the GrapheneOS developers are looking into this.

Anyways, it's only been a week since I made the move. I'm sure more use cases will come up the more I use GrapheneOS, and instead of fear, I find myself excited at testing out more apps and functionalities on the OS. Traveling is one scenario I have not yet tried, but that's because I'm not leaving town to go anywhere. That's one set of scenarios that I look forward to trying out.

If anyone has any other advices or information they have about their experience with GrapheneOS, I would welcome it. And for those who are still undecided about moving to GrapheneOS, I hope this post relieves some of your anxieties or worries about making the transition.

Everyone keeps saying it's the best media player, so I'm interested in getting one, but I haven't had a google account for many years now and don't want to create a new one just for this.

Does anyone know if it's possible to run one without a google account?

Edit: I would only want to use it for Plex and maybe youtube

Fossify Contacts (fork of Simple Contacts) and Fossify SMS Messenger (fork of Simple SMS Messenger) have been released on F-Droid.

Other Fossify apps available for download on F-Droid:

(ICYMI, Simple Mobile Tools suite was acquired by an adware company and their apps on the Google Play Store now contain trackers and unnecessary permissions. This report from Exodus shows that the old version of Simple Gallery had 0 trackers and 10 permissions, whereas the app, after sale, contains 9 trackers and 21 permissions!)

About Fossify: Fossify is all about community-backed, open-source, and ad-free mobile apps. A fork of the SimpleMobileTools, which is no longer maintained, and we’re here to continue the legacy, bringing simple and private tech to everyone.

Fossify Gallery (fork of Simple Gallery), Fossify File Manager (fork of Simple File Manager) and Fossify Calendar (fork of Simple Calendar) are now available for download on F-Droid.

(Simple Mobile Tools suite was acquired by an Israeli adware company)

About Fossify: Fossify is all about community-backed, open-source, and ad-free mobile apps. A fork of the SimpleMobileTools, which is no longer maintained, and we're here to continue the legacy, bringing simple and private tech to everyone.

Some folks recommended SimpleMobileTools such as calendar. After it was sold off, a fork was created by one of their contributors, and it's released on F-droid now.

Wanted to give this update in case folk were curious.

I downloaded all my photos with google takeout.

The folder structure is an absolute mess.

It would be nice to organise them into YYYY/MM folders but I haven't been able to think of an easy way to do that.

I note that all images seem to have sidecar files ? Like matching json files. I've never encountered these before and not really aware of any command line tools that support them. It's just another challenge as regards writing a script to re-organise files.

Any insights much appreciated.

Hi,

I recently bought a pixel 7a on ebay, which I have installed GrapheneOS on. Sadly, the device doesn't detect the sim.

I tried restarting the device, resetting the mobile network settings and reinserting the sim.

~~Now I read that providers can carrier lock devices, which I didn't know was a thing. 😅🫠 Since the device was originally part of a contract I'm worried that it is locked.~~

~~How can I check for this? All the tutorials I found were for Android and didn't work on graphene.~~

Edit: checked in with the provider, they don't lock phones. What other reasons could there be for the Sim not working?

...turns out contacts on the sim just needed a cleaning

For my degoogled android, I am uninstalling bloatwares using adb. Now, I even decided to remove Play Store and use Aurora Store and Obtainium; but haven't touched Google Play Service.

Everything was running smoothly till I recently installed ChatGPT Android; but the app is not even starting, and shows the message you need Play Store or Update it.

Is their any way around for it.

I am considering microG but not aware how those tech work; also no intention for rooting my phone

This is probably gonna be very long, so, if you dont have time and patience, skip it. I gonna tell you my journey on degoogle my life and share my thoughts. Btw, my english not that good, so, the warning is given :p

So, lets begin.

> Fake step 1: Uninstalled windows, went to Linux and unfortunately return to windows

spoilerWhile I read more and more about privacy concerns and google/meta spyware, I just go through to Linux. I dont thinked about this step and just go forward. After some weeks of using Linux Mint, I realised Linux dont have some programms I need it and find windows more stable to edit videos. After these weeks, I return because of these reasons. After returned to windows, I did this:

  • Debloat all stupid programms that Windows10 have. Deleted Cortana, Edge and others things I dont need/use.

  • Disabled all telemetry possible and Im using OOShutUp10.

  • Replaced Edge for Librewolf and Firefox. Replaced Office for LibreOffice.

  • Used Capcut and DaVinci Resolve to edit videos. Tho, I will search more about video editors to know which are more user and privacy friendly.

  • The only spyware-programms I have are Discord (I use the openasar extension and really need Discord to talk with my friends) and spotify (dont find yet a better replacement).

I want to return in the future to Linux, but this time I will lost more time to search which distro is better for me using a Virtual Box.

> Step 2: Be more conscious about apps and programms I use. Discovering email-aliases. Changing to Proton/Tutanota

spoiler

Ok, so….. Now, I just use apps or programms from google, meta or other spyware-stuff IF I REALLY NEED. Dont like Whatsapp but I need to talk with my family and friends. This is the same reason why Im still using Discord. Deleted some site accounts where have some (very) shady privacy rules.

Discovered email-alias and now im using for everything where request an e-mail. Evertyhing. My spotify and discord accounts are emails-alias. My e-mail here is an alias. Its help me to know where I have an account and give me more control about that. Maybe this looks paranoid, but this is the way I find to protect my privacy and get a better control on my things. To not look ultra-paranoid, I give you something about me: Im portuguese.

Replaced gmail for proton and tutanota. I dont deleted my gmail account yet because in this email unfortunately have some services associated, like my bank. This year, one of my main goals are to solve this problems and delete permanently my gmail account.

> Step 2.5 (Maybe fake step): Deleted my social media accounts (Instagram and twitter)

spoilerI call this “maybe fake step” because I deleted my social media for these reasons: I was fed up about them, they bothering me a lot and dont help my mental health. Privacy policies was not the main thing to deleted them, so this is the reason I call a fake step. I also deleted them to prove myself I could do a social media detox. Bellow, I will explain more detail my reasons. If you dont want to read them, you can skip this step.

Dont have facebook since 2018 and deleted my reddit account on 2021. Facebook looked very dead for me and nobody (my friends and family) uses it (they have an account but rarely use it). Reddit account I dont need it and deleted because I dont like about their privacy rules and others sh** stuff they did. I barely used my reddit account and if I had do 10 posts on total, was too much. And I can see the only one subreddit I want without account. Im only using Whatsapp, if you consider this a social media.

~~ Instagram. Why I deleted? This is problably the most schocked step I made for my friends. The reasons why I deleted my instagram account:

  • I felt like a boomer using instagram. I only went to my ig account 5 times per month, no more than that. Imagine a 90-year-old-mand using Linux for the first time. Yes, its me using ig.

  • I saw my friends loses a bunch of time scrolling on ig and watching random videos, and Im was afraid of that. Because is a really time consumer and seems a little danger to view the beautifull lies of people buying cars and eating on the best resaturants. I guess this not help nobody.

  • Mostly, my followers were friends of my chillhood, and lets be honest: I and they dont care about each other. They dont need to know nothing about my life and I dont have interest to know about them. So, to clear this people from my life, I deleted my account.

  • Privacy concerns maybe it weigh about 20%-10%.

~~ Twitter. Why I deleted?

I think twitter is a great tool if you filter A LOT which you want to view. I learn a lot about football there and follow some people who have a good content. This is was my main reason to continue on twitter. However, some months after Elon buy twitter, I see a lot of racism and homophobic tweets and this is really annoying me. A lot. I saw this not help me and make me really frustrated and decided give up. Twitter gave me some opportunities to write about football for one blog (yes, I really like write) and gave me some helpfull contacts to share some opinions. Is very probably return to twitter on the future, just because I want to express my opinions about football (if you are american, im talk about soccer) and if really exists anyone who like my thoughts and my work (I worked an half-season on one youth football team).

> Step 3: Android

spoilerIn October, I started to understand how can I make my android more private and secure. During this time, I lost one week searching about if my oneplus have an custom ROM. Unfortunately, dont have. Some time after, in November, discovered is it possible to do one thing. Debloat and ride off all google stuff. During this month, I put all my effort on this and try debloat as possible as I can my phone , degoogle it and improve battery life.

And now, Im feeling in love again for my phone. Its a good phone, but this make my phone looking more shinning, for me. This is what I feel. But, lets talk about what I did.

  • Discovered Universal Android Debloat. This help me a lot to find which apps I can remove and give me tools to search some apps which my android can live without.

  • Removed Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play Store, etc etc etc. The only apps was stayed, was clock and camera. My replacements:

    • Google Play Store – Aurora store and use Obtaiunium to update apps
  • Google dialer – Tried right dialer and Koler. Im using Simple dialer (from Simple Mobile Tools) for now, but I will replace in the future.

  • Contacts – Tried Right Contacts and im using Simple Contacts Pro SE

  • Youtube - Newpipe

  • SMS – QKSMS

  • Files manager – Material Files and PlainApp

  • Gmail – Im not using e-mail on my phone after debloat

  • Gallery / Google Photos – Tried Gallery from greensoft infotech and now im using Vsmart gallery

  • Chrome – Tried Mull and Fennec and im using Cromite and PrivacyBrowser

  • Calendar – Shitfcal

  • Calculator – Opencalc

  • Google Maps - OsMand~

  • Spotify and whatsapp is the only spyware Im using.

This gave me a lot of work but as I said, im enjoying more than ever my phone. You probably may find some issues with debloating, and the reason to spend much time with this was when I removed Google Framework and Google Services. For many androids, this is probably a redflag and causes a bootloop, but with many tries I discovered how can uninstalling them. In my phone, Whatsapp and Spotify still works, but some apps requires GSF and cant install it. The main issue is the updates of my smartphone. Simply the updates dont work but I guess i can live without them. When I will return to twitter i need to install them again, but this is one problem for the future.

> Step 4: Discovering and searching for alternatives

spoilerAs have you seen, I found some reliable alternatives for the things i want to change, despite some excepetions. I saw Lemmy and Kbin as alternatives to reddit, but at the beggining, I dont bothered with that. After some time, my need to express myself was growing, and decide create an account here. So far, im liking a lot. Mainly because it is open-source, have good privacy policies and I can see people thoughts and share mines. And I hope can contribute with good stuff.

> Final thoughts

spoilerAfter one moth, I see a funny thing. My gmail account stop receiving too much spam as in the past. I went to my gmail account one time per week, and now its very rare to see spam. Funny, isn’t it?

Probably this is a placebo effect, but nowadays im feeling less spyed. Obviously, this is impossible for anyone who uses internet , and the only way to make this possible is dont use internet, dont have an email and use a Nokia 3310. But Im feeling good with this changes and this is which matters, on the final day.

See you around here, fellas . Have a nice day

I hope this question is allowed here (since it is one of the search engines that i now use instead of google). I'm trying out Kagi. For the trial, you get to have 100 free searches, i belief. Is there a way to see how many searches i used up? I can only find stats for Kagi, not for my personal stats. How do you all like Kagi? And if so, do you pay for it? I'm considering paying, but i would like to have some insight into how many searches i actually perform on average in a month time. I honestly have no idea. What i also do lately is ask a question to a LLM (i found Petal), so that i have a start on where to search for more precisely. Sometimes, i get incorrect answers, but often it helps me get more of a handle on what i should be looking for when using a search engine. For example, i switched to Linux and Petal helps me understand some things better, which i can then use to do a more precise search.
