There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

How did we get so casual about conspiracy theories?

I was talking with someone today about nutrition. This person has a PhD in material science. They mentioned eating beef daily and I asked about the cholesterol implications. The answer was about a vague 'they' wanted us to think that, but it wasn't true anymore.

I hear the vague 'they' so frequently now it's just a normal conversation. In truth, as soon as I hear the vague they I dismiss the speaker's credibility on the subject, but how did we get here? Vague they wanted us to think X is a valid counter argument by the most highly educated people in our society?

This sounds like more of a rant than a question, but I do truly want to know how this happened? Was it pop culture like the X Files that made conspiracy theories main stream? Was it social media? When will the vague they stop being an accepted explanation? Has it always been this way and I didn't notice?

Thanks, love you!

I used to occasionally enjoy watching random videos online. But this trend of people attaching their annoying and obviously FAKE reactions on top of the video is happening a lot lately. Aren't people bothered by this ? How is that even supposed to help with the content of the video ? I understand if they own the content of the video, but lately I see a lot of people doing it on completely random content.

What i mean by this is something that is too peculiar to explain.

Happened recently. Made business cards. Proud of them. Feels like a continuation of father legacy to a certain degree. Edited them from advice he gave my mom when they started their business. Was cherry on top.

Next day. In meeting at work. Boss randomly calls me my dad's name. She has no family or any connection to it. She just felt called to call me that at that time. No knowledge beforehand of my dad's name.

Literally felt like his spirit hugged me. I am not typically a spiritual person... but cosmic coincidence is a spooky fucking thing.

Seen similar things but nothing to this level.

What are yours?

Why does the official Lemmy docu say:

Lemmy uses roughly 150 MB of RAM in the default Docker installation. CPU usage is negligible.

whereas the Node.js server alone (dessalines/lemmy-ui container) consumes over 100 MB?

I would have easily ordered a 2 GB VPS in the first place, but I trusted the documentation to be up-to-date.

husband and i are both autistic, so we were always very accepting of others. we’re also both bisexual, my husband being almost exclusively gay except for when it comes to me.

when we found out our 15-year-old leo was gay, we were very happy for him and we told him that he was still our leo we loved.

It made me wonder, hearing from certain people who faced discrimination and harassment. They were hurt every single day intentionally and some of them had PTSD caused by their harm and became incredibly jumpy and traumatized.

Would that make the person who caused the harm evil?

I'm learning how to build up my own synths in Bitwig Grid, but I'm far from the point where I can just imagine a sound and then implement it.

Does anyone know what synth that is in the sweep at the linked time? I realize it's most likely an analog or analog-modeling synth, but which one? More advanced question: what combination of oscillators and filters would one combine to get that sound?

Hello Lemmings! For the past year or so, I've been working on a solo project, and I'm kinda close to being finished with it! It's a punk rock album, made with mostly open-source tools (the only non-FOSS stuff is a couple of plugins that didn't have good open-source alternatives)!

I've seen other folks promote their games here, but so far I haven't seen any music done this way, and I was wondering if it's maybe not allowed? Some sort of Lemmy faux pas? If it is, indeed, allowed, then what communities would be amenable to maybe a twice weekly post? Should one make their own community for this purpose? What about a general purpose community for self-promotion, i.e. "imadethis" back on the old place? As you can see, much to consider. (I don't have anything out yet, so this post in itself is not self-promotion.)

What say ye, o wise Lemmings?

I don't care about the kids under 30. The funnier the better, and the older you are the more I want to know: what would you like to be when you grow up?
Achievable goals fall short of true potential.

I’ve done alot of mischievous and unkind things throughout my education time (k-12) I made fun of people, bullied people, stole from people/stores, hit people, kicked people, did things to annoy people, and just overall did stupid shit to cause problems all because it either felt cool or because I thought it was funny. Some of these were things I did because my friends did them, but some were just me being stupid on my own. I am now 21 and recently I have thought about all of this and feel awful about the things I’ve done because I know it has affected people. I wish I could go back and have never done any of it. Is something wrong with me? Am I a bad person?

toxic masculinity, tons of people aware of the bad things but most people think its taboo for men to think about their social reformation.

Some of my more well versed lady friends basically describe it like "the women can't do all the social reformation, men gotta do their part too"

Would be nice to make this thread into a list of resources, like groups, YouTube channels, websites, books, whatever.

It would be very helpful to define these things for people too I think, I don't think there is a name for men's social revolution yet, or at least one that is well known.

this has been on my mind a bit, especially as someone who’s faced discrimination their whole life for being autistic.

this, however, goes back to fourth grade. i was 9 & 10. my school social worker was named mrs. h, and she acted a lot like a high school “mean girl”.

my dad called her bipolar once due to the fact that she’d be aggressive and rude one day, and perfectly cheerful the next.

sadly, i never spoke to s again, but i was once placed in a group with her. nothing ever bad happened with her, except for when she said she didn’t like talking about my interests but mrs. h wanted me to listen to hers. i later found out s didn’t even care if she heard about my interests but mrs. h told her to say she didn’t like it.

i found out that s didn’t even like mrs h because she apparently threatened s to say things that were untrue and harmful, and made her (an 11 year old) cry for not wanting to.

afterwards, i was in a group with r, t, and z. i only currently know t because neither r nor z go here.

i always had these ideas for hangouts with the three so i could make friends during weekly lunch groups with mrs. h, but they’d always be like “nooo… i don’t really want to.” or what z said: “yeah but other people would be left out if only us 4 hung out” (despite the fact that z & t always hung out).

mrs. h would then be like “looks like they don’t wanna hang out with you,” and shrug

I don’t quite remember what r did, but she was constantly rude. then she’d smile at me and want to hang out.

there were several times mrs. h defending my being bullied, said being hit by bullies was “ok”. i also have a history of going on online chat rooms at age 7-8, and every day i was convinced being harassed by those predators was my fault. a crime. after all, it was just like mrs. H and everyone said: i did this to myself and therefore deserved my trauma.

she asked me once “does anyone in your family drink?”

i said: “my dad has a bottle of beer every so often with dinner.”

when i came home, my family was angry and told me “mrs. h called and said you told her your whole family was in rehab.”

i, of course, never said this.

in lunch groups, she would also get mad at me for stimming and wouldn’t let me speak to others, constantly interrupting me and punishing me for speaking when she’d let other kids speak.

The older I get the more clear basically every facet of our society is to exploit us and fill us with propaganda.

The first thing that comes to mind when I wake up is how much I just hate being surround by this species that seems to want nothing more than to destroy itself.

Everything is a fucking joke and I'm fucking tired of everyone but I have a daughter.

I'm absolutely miserable and disgusted by basically everyone but I don't have the luxury of being able to quit. I just long for death.
