There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

American here. I have a job where they have a perk where you submit receipts through their app or website and you earn points you can cash out at some point if you shop with clients of our company. Sounds like a nice little promotional incentive, right?

Well, they say it’s optional but it’s not. You can apparently get in trouble for not using this and we’ve been pulled aside about it and warned we must use this stupid thing.

The idea is the app you install must be given permission to see your location at all times. It then checks the area to ensure you are favoring clients of our company as opposed to our competitors when you shop. When you shop at one of our clients, you must report your receipt to the company showing everything you bought while there. Even if you are buying gas, you need to report it.

I don’t participate in this invasion of privacy. I actually want to put less of my data out there in general, not more. I don’t even have a grocery store discount card. We were told in a meeting this week that promotions in this company are influenced by how much/if you participate in the program. We were told people have been denied promotions because they did not participate in this program.

If I’m off the clock they don’t get to decide what I do. They can fuck themselves. And I am surely not giving them a little report of what I buy. But saying we are ineligible for career advancement within the company unless we buy groceries, gas, etc from preferred vendors seems sketchy. Is this legal?

Contractor installed this convoluted p-trap + elbow for the washer, and I'm not sure if it's up to code. Can you confirm and more importantly explain why or why not it's compliant?

Man everywhere in the world is just about war these days. What a shitshow of a time to live.

Where did all smart people who can actually lead and de-escalate go ?

Is there something or someone I can follow for a while to distract myself from this shit and actually learn something ?

I watched this new whistleblower guys testimony and for the first time I actually believe what’s being presented. Elizondo comes off as a grifter/actor, but I don’t know. Something about this testimony feels honest and real. Not another complete embarrassment like Jake Barber / Skywatcher crew just trying to get a new show like skinwalker ranch going. Him talking about covert spy satellites making up a lot of UAP stuff made good sense to me, and some of the more incredible stuff like the Russians studying perhaps even interacting with UAP phenomena really made my jaw drop. Learning about the secret internet within the pentagon was really cool. It feels like a crime to withhold all that knowledge from the public though, But I don’t know anything. What do you smart people out there think is going on?

I have been getting mail from my back for someone I assume used to live at my place since I moved in. I kept ignoring it, thinking she would change her address eventually. It's been about a year and they are still sending me bank mail for a person I've never met.

This seems like a serious security issue so I called the bank and alerted them to the problem. I was told I would have to find her and get her new address for them so they could change it. This seems.....wrong. I'm alerting you to a security issue with one of your accounts and you need ME to fix it? The agent on the phone said there was nothing they could do without a new address.

I pressed harder and asked them to flag that account so she would have a warning she needs to talk to a banker next time she tries to use her account. Eventually he relented and put a flag on her account.

This seems really sloppy. Do banks just, not care about the mail they send out going to the right place? I'm honestly considering switching to a credit union over this.

I don't know if the article is impartial. I just thought people might need some context.

I’m a senior who’s 21 years old. I will be 22 in July. I today found out I have to retake two college classes. And it sucks because I see on social media where some of my classmates that I graduated with in high school graduated college this spring. They got their bachelors and are moving on. I feel left behind because now I have to wait until the fall. I just hate the thought of being the last person to do something. It’s the worst feeling.  I have to wait 7 months. I have never been good in school! I have always struggled. But it seems so easy for others. I hate the feeling.

Took this photo during sunrise, and the clouds look like rays coming off the area of the sunrise (especially the left side). It reminds me of crespusclar rays, but also seems different. Is this that, a similar phenomenon, or did the clouds just line up perfectly here?

Hi all,

I'm a pretty chill person in my actions but quite sensible in the 'inside'.

Sometimes I run into issues with my feelings which can be very apparent in my eyes / gaze. It's fine most of the time but I recently had a not-so-confortable-situation where i wished I could keep a neutral gaze in front of a stranger to avoid making things more complicated.

Do you know any technique / tips to keep a friendly / neutral posture, even when someone is exhausting you or making you angry?

Thanks!

A friend and I were discussing recently the interesting phenomenon where despite us having highly unrelated jobs/passions with unrelated skillsets, we are both considered "software engineers" because we happen to write code. I believe this happens because when, say, family asks what we do, it usually feels like they're mainly interested in the day-to-day as opposed to the core purpose of the work. This makes perfect sense and is fine, but between two people who write code it is probably reductive communication.

This prompted us to strip back the code-writing part and come up with a new job title for each of our occupations; my actual job, and his primary interest. The new titles were far more descriptive of the core work we both do that is probably more salient on a fundamental level than the programming part.

Mine was "software engineer" -> "video compression researcher" His was "software engineer" -> "web platform designer/developer" (using developer in the name still feels like cheating, but we couldn't think of anything else)

SWEs (or CS students): Do this for yourselves. What does this look like for you?

The original and prequel trilogies are worthwhile viewing. The sequel trilogy, however, presents a different case. While George Lucas provided story treatments during the 2012 sale, these were ultimately discarded. The sequels also marked the end of the Expanded Universe, removed from canon to allow creative freedom for filmmakers. Given that the stories deviate significantly from Lucas’s original vision, is there really a compelling reason to watch them?

I've been giving Mastodon a fair share over the past few months, but even though the user base is significantly larger on that platform than Lemmy, I find the actual user ENGAGEMENT significantly worse. I'll be posting random super interesting shit (according to me at least) and get fuck all as any for of reaction whatsoever, whereas Lemmy and its users actually engage in dope content. Therefore I've come to the clear scientific and educated decision that Lemmy is simply superior. Since it's "AskLemmy" - thoughts?

UPDATE: I posted on Nextdoor for my local neighborhood. Girl was identified and someone reached out to her. She said her phone had died, she got turned around and just needed directions. But she made it home ok!! :)

True story, by the way. This happened to me earlier tonight.

Mid-size city, 500K people. Suburbia area. Well lit. Good part of town. Next to parks, schools, etc. Nice weather.

9:30 tonight (Sunday), I was in the house putting away some laundry. I heard the doorbell. I didn't think anything of it, because I have been getting lots of amazon deliveries.

30 seconds or so later, a knock on the door. Wow, delivery guy is def letting me know I guess.

So I finish folding my laundry, go to front porch. Probably 5 to 10 minutes since knock on door. No package. Weird.

I check my porch camera and it shows a teen girl, maybe 15 or so, out of breath ringing the doorbell. She's wearing pajama bottom pants, shoes, hoodie and a backpack. And she says to herself, "I need help. This is terrible."

She sets on my front step for a few seconds, gets up, then knocks on door. Looks around. Then leaves.

After I see vid, run to sidewalk... look up and down. Nothing. I run back in, put shoes on, go out and again, looking. Nothing.

I call 911 tell the police what happened, they send someone out, but they don't get here till about 30 minutes later. So basically police show up a full 45 minutes after the girl knocked on my door.

While waiting for police, I see neighbor, 2 houses down, pulling out of driveway. I run up to him, show him vid, tell him what happened, he says he'll check his cams, but he didn't get a knock or doorbell ring.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't at least check the porch cam right when doorbell rang. I legit can not stop thinking about that girl knocking on a strangers (my) door hoping I would answer.

She was out of breath, but wasn't banging on the door extra loud or anything. No crying. And I have neighbors all over and across the street. And just a block down is a 7-11.

So it probably wasn't super serious (I hope!), and maybe she just lost her phone or something (I hope!). But I can't sleep thinking about it.

I posted the vid to my local nextdoor community webpage, posted on facebook, etc. All in the hopes that someone will recognize her.

What would you guys do in this situation? Anything I could have done differently (other than answer the door)?

tl;dr: I ignored doorbell thinking it was just amazon package. Check porch cam later and realize it was teen girl saying she needed help and that something terrible happened. Police didn't arrive till 45 minutes later and no sign of girl.

I know a question asking if Santa exists sounds childish but parallel universe theory is a thing. So even though Santa doesn't live at OUR north pole, does he live at the north pole in one of infinite parallel universes?

Hello hello! So I'm trying to broaden my culinary horizon right now, things have gotten a bit stale since I have a mild case of ARFID and tend to fall back on safe foods (protein bars, fruit pureés, burritos) when I don't keep an eye on my diet. Ideally I'm looking for something that's healthy and reqires little prep. And it should be obtainable in Germany. But if the title speaks to you in any other way I'm interested to hear your thoughts anyway.
