A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. Avoid politics
    • 3.1) NEW RULE as of 5 Nov 2024, trying it out
    • 3.2) Political posts often end up being circle jerks (not offering unique perspective) or enflaming (too much work for mods).
    • 3.3) Try c/politicaldiscussion, volunteer as a mod here, or start your own community.
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct

In the sidebar you will see that rule 3 is "Avoid politics", as of US election day.

Political posts represent the vast majority of the moderation burden. They tend not to be the fun/quirky/whimsical/goofy/nonsense kind of posts that people enjoy from c/showerthoughts.

Maybe we should make a c/drivewaythoughts or a c/doomscrollingthoughts to fill the void.

The rule will begin 0200 UTC Nov 6, 2024 to be exact, you have 2 minutes, go ham.

As always I'm open to feedback.

EDIT: While I'm editing the sidebar. I will remove the "Be good to others" rule because it's redundant to the opening paragraph of Lemmy's Code of Conduct.

EDIT 2: If you want to give anonymous feedback you can report this post and give your feedback in the report. It's anonymous to me at least.

EDIT 3: Here are some good counter points to the new rule:

  1. This arguably offers new perspective on an ordinary topic but it's pretty political: https://lemmy.world/post/21997198
  2. This post was very popular and remained civil: https://lemmy.world/post/21925102

Most of us just want to fit in, and believe what everybody believes.

Coming to your beliefs this way is not actually intelligent. We don't do it consciously. It's just tribalism or herding instinct or whatever.

So if everybody agrees with you then that's a pretty good sign that you are wrong.

I always expect to see a James Bond villain or some sexy robot women in the room.

"Coming, Master Bruce. I just need to fetch the wet wipes again."

Modern cars have MASSIVE digital displays, loads of computers systems monitoring every subsystem and internal diagnostics running to the OBDII ports.

Why the hell can't we get diagnostic feeds on our console or infotainment center?

I'm not aware of any car manufacturers selling their own diagnostic ASICs, so it's not an extra margin to squeeze afaik...

What gives? Any insight into this beyond the usual muh corporate profits conjecture?

It seems like the ultimate way to show WHY and HOW a company is poorly run… or the inverse.

Could you estimate when someone wakes up using Received receipts in most messaging apps?

Eureka, Humboldt County, CA is at the same latitude as Eureka, Woodford County, IL, as well as Eureka, Warrington Township, PA.

Just picturing an alien archaeologist "so, as they stopped being crippled by polio or losing their lives building railroads, they complained about having to wash the dishes?"
