I don't know what running up in the minds of Xiaomi but their decision is killing me. Ever Since their New Mobile & Hyper OS showcase many have tried to migrate to use it, may be too many bootloader unlock request during the time was reason made them think that it would affect the sale of their latest mobile (u know the user experience before even releasing the phone worldwide...) May be that is the reason why they shutdown I guess... Just my Personal opinion.

But their decision is simply stopping me from moving to Lineage OS. But I suspect they may bring the service back after couple of months after their phone release.

Hello! I'm running GrapheneOS on my Pixel 7 with sandboxed play services, and use some apps that depends on play services like Satispay and my banking app. Today I tried, as an experiment, to deactivate the play service app, and see what happens. Well, they both opens and seem to work, except for a notification saying "Activate Play Services, this app will not work if you don't" Is this notification lying? Or are some functionalitis not working without play services? If yes, which one?

When I uninstall GameOptimizingService using Canta with Shizuku, it gets installed back immediately. I get a notification from TrackerControl that a new app was installed, but it is deleted almost immediately by itself. Is there a way to uninstall this app forever? I really hate whatever they are doing.

I ve been using new pipe for really long time but now it feels like this update even more great. Now we could see shorts, live, playlist (which was I wanted for longtime, always had the struggle of searching a particular video). Overall it's better now and lighter compared to Libretube.

I mean they're still the ones who made the hardware

I've been thinking about getting an e-reader (thinking kobo or boox) and wanted to know if it's possible to remove unwanted stuff (like the play store) using adb? I plan on just downloading .epub files from annas-archive and ao3, so it would be good if firefox or mull can be installed via .apk.

I recently dumped my Pixel for an iPhone. Feels dirty, but it's fine.

I've also been following the story of how Google Drive has lost a bunch of customer files and is just closing bug reports and support tickets without offering help, and I'm worried that Google is not an acceptable backup solution because they don't seem to give a shit about customers... and why would they? They own the world. Fuck mere humans.

Anyhoo, I'm trying to figure out where to move my backups (100GB), my docs (I'd love something where I can do sheets and docs in browsers and mobile apps), and probably my email too, because why not... but I suppose I could do email through proton or skiff or anyhing, but everyone offers it.

I'm currently looking at Zoho as the possible best option. It looks like I could do all three for like $6/mo which seems reasonable. Does anyone use it?

How are the docs and sheets? Is searching email robust? Mobile apps? Does Zoho hate customers as much as Google? Will they eventually?

This has been one of the key features I've been waiting for to finally be able to move away from Google Photos and OneDrive.

I'm looking for something that can replace Google Photos. I found out about Ente through F-Droid, and based on what I see on their website, it appears to be a good alternative. I'm not looking for anything special. Just something that will allow me to backup and sync my photos across devices.

Does anyone here have experience with Ente? If so, can you please tell me the pros and cons?

Why would anyone use this over Proton Mail or the gazillion alternatives if it treats people like shit.

If I only wanted to degoogle and disable other manufacturer's bloatware from my Android device, is using adb to "uninstall" the system apps from user 0 pretty much as effective as rooting and using something like debloat terminal while rooted or are there bypasses that make rooting the better option? I'm not concerned about reclaiming the space used by these disabled system apps in this case.

I had reimaged my old Samsung on LineageOS as it seemed to be the only alternative that supported my model. It was fine until I installed OSMAnd, which couldn't get a location. Shame on me for not noticing that I would need microG for that. Not feeling comfortable with all the rooting and flashing needed to shoehorn microG into an existing image, I figured I'd try LineageOS for microG.

Having loaded a lot onto this phone already, I wanted to try a dirty flash first, knowing full well it might not work. The first prerequisite is to use an image of LOS/µG that is dated higher than the image in the phone. I had just updated, so I needed to wait for the next one.

The docs say that LineageOS for microG will be updated "a couple of times a month". But the latest LOS/µG image has remained at 11/2/23. This means I haven't had an opportunity to try the dirty flash, but it's also a security warning sign for me—LOS updates weekly like clockwork. Irregular and slower-than-promised updates make me a bit nervous for this aspect of device safety. It's not just my model either; most of the images are backdated more than two weeks.

Hello there! This is my problem: I'm going to buy a new smartphone, and I'd really like to degoogle myself as much as possible. The idea would be to buy a device compatible with LineageOS, but... Supported devices are usually older models, and often there are newer devices with better specs for the same price, that does not support lineageOS. Is seems a shame to buy a device with lower specs than another one just because of software compatibility. So the alternative would be to buy an unsupported device, unlock the bootloader and debloat it as much as possible, flash privileged fdroid and aurora store on it, install microg, etc... What do you suggest me to do? Is the second alternative a viable option? What other steps should I do if I decide to go that way?

Thanks to anyone for the great answers! I finally decided to buy a pixel 6 (or 6 pro if I find a good deal) and install a custom ROM on it! GrapheneOS will support it for "only" 3 more years, while other roms like lineageos or divestos will have longer support. What do you suggest? Graphene OS and when support ends switch to another one? O directly use the other one?

It's a well-known fact that Google spies on users, which isn't anything new. However, the fact that they are now using this as a reference in a marketing meme is insulting.

Google is now making jokes at customers expense, using memes for promotional ads on Reddit, and saying that they don't care about you because they know people will still buy their ad-platform spyware products.

Hi, I am often in unfamiliar locations because of what I do for work and I'm having trouble finding ways to search for businesses that are close by. I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I've let myself become pretty dependent, over many years of phone use now, to just use google maps to search for pretty much everything... I'm no longer happy with this method, and I'd like to eliminate my dependency on them.

What are some of your favorite ways to research new locations you're unfamiliar with? I'm willing to go as far as seeking out phone books if I have to. (I remember the days before the internet, let me tell you...)

Also, I have both organic street maps as well as osmand installed and while I really like using organic street maps it (as well as osmand) is quite lacking in this certain respect.
