What were they expecting ๐ญ๐ญ what even is a non-political "big lie"? That the earth is round or something???
There's the TVTropes page someone linked, which has a bunch of stuff everyone believes because they became common audio/visual shorthand in TV and movies.
The earth isn't round, it's an oblate spheroid

Spheroids are round, that's what makes them sphereoidal.
No, spheres are round, a spheroid is just mostly round.
With all round, the only thing you can do is rifle through their pockets and look for loose change.
I think flat-earthers would contend that that's a very political lie
